Job Summary

  • Completion of Grade 12
  • Valid class 5 Alberta Operators Licence
  • Must have an entry level designation as a Fire Safety Codes Officer (Group A as prescribed by the Safety Codes Council / provincial authority) and a minimum of one (1) year related experience
  • NFPA 1031 Level 1 is described as an equivalent certification prescribed by the Safety Codes Council
  • Must obtain a full certification level Fire Safety Codes Officer designation as prescribed by the Safety Codes
  • Council / provincial authority within two (2) years of employment. Fire Discipline training includes but not limited to Group A Group B Level 1 and 2
  • Must complete all classes of Fire Safety Codes Officer Inspector designation within four (4) years of employment including but not limited to Fire SCO Group E designation
  • In lieu of one year related experience candidates may be considered:
    • Minimum of two (2) years experience as a Safety Codes inspector in another discipline OR
    • Completed Building Construction Technology diploma (or a related diploma from a recognized institute) or a Journeyman Certificate in a related fieldOR
    • Minimum five (5) years experience in the construction industry or five (5) years experience as a member of a municipal Fire Service

Skills required for success:

  • Thorough knowledge of and ability to interpret the provisions and intent of applicable codes regulations and legislation including but not limited to the Alberta Safety Codes Act National Fire Code - Alberta Edition and Occupational Health and Safety Regulations then apply these to the inspection of buildings and building systems within an assigned area
  • Extensive knowledge of building design materials and construction methods encompassing not just structural systems and building envelope but also mechanical and electrical systems within buildings
  • Ability to issue Field Notices corrective letters and Orders under the Safety Codes Act
  • Ability to review safety plans including construction site safety plans
  • Ability to review and interpret technical reports examine building plans research the behavior of materials and substances
  • Ability to conduct seminars and make presentations on fire safety and fire prevention
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills including the ability to present technical information to non-technical audiences
  • Ability to make independent decisions under pressure
  • Ability to defuse potentially difficult situations and to deal with difficult situations
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with co-workers and community groups
  • Ability to relate to diverse groups in the community
  • Thorough knowledge of inspection and prosecution procedures
  • Ability to be self motivated and work alone

Conditions of Employment:

  • Compliance with the City of Edmontons safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton and there may be a cost associated with this requirement
  • Candidates are required to hold a valid Alberta Class 5 drivers licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Drivers permit is a requirement of this position

Work Environment:

  • Due to the nature of this work this position is not eligible for a hybrid work arrangement
  • This role works in both indoor and outdoor settings
  • Exposure to environmental conditions including extreme temperatures inclement weather dust noise light variation vibrations chemicals and exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards may occur

Salary Range: $42.636-$63.077 Hourly; $89023.970-$131704.780 Annually

We are looking for motivated individuals willing to aspire to a new challenge and become a member of our Fire Prevention your role as a Fire Prevention Officer you will serve under the direction of the Fire Marshal reporting to your assigned Captain Fire Prevention Officer.

What will you do

  • Conduct inspections of buildings structures and places in an assigned area to identify and locate fire hazards and ensuring compliance with applicable codes regulations and legislations
  • Communicates safety requirements to property owners tenants and managers
  • Prepare inspection reports and maintain records of inspection
  • Issue field notices corrective letters and orders under the Safety Codes Act; appear in court as a witness when required
  • Review building safety plans and construction site safety plans
  • Prepare briefs for the Fire Technical Sub Council in conjunction with their supervisor
  • Review and interpret technical reports examine building plans research the behavior of materials and substances
  • Participate in safety promotions throughout the community partnerships with the private sector and some project work
  • Participate in night patrols to ensure that bars and nightclubs are in compliance with relevant standards
  • Create and present public safety education and awareness programs
  • Perform other related duties as required
