Purpose of the Role

BGIS is seeking a Trade Assistant / Handyperson to support facilities maintenance services within a nationally significant heritage-listed precinct in Canberra . This is a newly created permanent role following the successful commencement of a long-term government contract.

Working closely with the on-site BGIS team including HVAC electrical and specialist trades you will contribute to the day-to-day care presentation and smooth operation of a high-profile public environment. Your work will support a safe welcoming and well-maintained setting for staff visitors veterans and the wider community.

The ideal candidate enjoys being hands-on values teamwork and takes pride in supporting meaningful places - including access to areas and assets not always visible to the public.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out general handyperson and minor maintenance tasks within capability and licence requirements
  • Assist licensed trades (HVAC electrical and others) by preparing work areas supporting installations and completing basic maintenance activities
  • Perform planned maintenance checks and visual inspections on selected assets escalating issues where required
  • Escort and supervise subcontractors working in restricted public-facing or heritage-sensitive areas
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation in line with BGIS systems WHS requirements and site protocols
  • Support safety initiatives by identifying hazards participating in toolbox talks and following safe work practices
  • Contribute to continuous improvement by sharing ideas that enhance maintenance outcomes efficiency and visitor safety
  • Build positive working relationships with clients contractors and BGIS colleagues

Education Experience & Skills

Essential:

  • Experience in facilities maintenance handyperson or trade assistant roles
  • Experience supporting licensed trades in a facilities or property environment
  • Comfortable working in public-facing operational and heritage-sensitive settings
  • Strong understanding of WHS requirements and safe work practices
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to follow site and security protocols
  • Handyperson competency (minor repairs inspections basic servicing tasks)
  • White Card (Construction Induction) or willingness to obtain

Desirable:

  • Experience in cultural institutions government facilities defence-related sites or heritage buildings
  • Familiarity with Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)
  • Additional trade-related training or vocational certifications

Workplace Flexibility

This position is based full-time on-site in Campbell ACT with free on-site parking and convenient access to public transport. Standard business hours apply with some flexibility to support operational needs.
