Position Purpose

This position is responsible for electrical and mechanical maintenance of Equipment Department Shop Machinery and Equipment and light shop building repairs and upgrades. The individual in this position may also be assigned to car maintenance and repairs as needed.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Performs all functions related to the preventive maintenance overhaul repair and upgrade of Car shop machinery including Car wash Component Wash and Blow pit buildings and equipment.
  2. Troubleshoot relay based analog electronic computer based and hydraulic and pneumatic control systems.
  3. Perform diagnostic tests for maintenance purposes.
  4. Keep equipment maintenance records updated and complete.
  5. Operate equipment necessary to access machinery such as lift platforms bucket truck etc.

This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to all provisions of the DRPA/PATCOS Substance Abuse Testing and Control Policy including random drug testing and periodic physical testing requirements.

Education and/or Experience

Required:

  • High school graduate or have equivalent (GED) and have completed post-high school course work in electrical and mechanical fields. This training may include training offered by manufacturers of equipment.
  • Five (5) years experience in industrial plant maintenance.
  • Requires knowledge of specialized safety procedures such as lockout/tag out confined space etc. Training will be provided for these areas.
  • Experience with electrical control systems relay logic programmable Logic controllers (PLCs) Industrial computer systems A/C and D/C motors and drives servomotors proximity optical and chemical sensors and various control panel and motor control center components.
  • Valid Drivers License in state of residence without major violations for last 3 years.
  • Experience with industrial plumbing systems including pumps and valves.
  • Experience with knowledge of pneumatic systems including pumps and valves and operating cylinders.
  • Experience with basic hydraulics including pumps basic valves and servos.
  • Must be proficient at reading electrical pneumatic and hydraulic schematics and PLC ladder diagrams.
  • Must be familiar with basic commercial building electrical supply lighting and controls.
  • Must pass an examination testing electrical and mechanical knowledge.
  • This position requires the knowledge of the correct and safe use of the full complement of industrial hand and power tools measuring devices gauges test instruments and material handling equipment needed for maintenance work. Material handling equipment can include bridge cranes fork lift trucks hi-rail equipped vehicles and elevated work platforms. Use of power cleaning abrasive cleaning and painting equipment is required. Use of heating equipment may be required for assembly/disassembly of components. When required individuals will be trained before using specialized equipment. The position requires the use of electrical diagnostic equipment.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee must occasionally walk stoop bend crawl ascend/descend stairs steps and ladders etc. The employee must support and position components that weigh up to one hundred and forty (140) pounds. The employee must possess the manual dexterity to disassemble assemble and install small components. The employee must possess visual acuity to identify and differentiate small parts as well as the ability to avoid work place obstacles. The individual must have the ability to detect audible warnings in a rail car maintenance shop environment. The employee must have the ability to climb up and down a rung ladder and also to climb up and down transit car(s) with a step height of as much as three (3) feet and lift leg(s) a height of twenty-four (24) inches to clear third rail by stepping over same. The employee must have normal day and night time vision corrected or uncorrected be without color blindness and have normal hearing with or without device. The employee must physically capable of wearing a respirator. The employee must be able to withstand heights of over one hundred and fifty (150) feet. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to all provisions of PATCOs Substance Abuse Testing and Control Policy including random drug and alcohol testing.

Working Conditions

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The duties and responsibilities of this position are usually performed inside in general lighting heating and ventilation. Cleaning work is performed outside in prevailing climate conditions. Occasionally work must be performed in rail storage yards along active railroad rights of way on bridges and in subways. When working on equipment work space can be confined and the use of flashlights or other supplemental lighting may be required. Ladders and/or work platforms will be required to access certain equipment. While performing the duties of this job the employee is required to sit (20%). The employee is required to stand and walk (60%) and lift climb and bend (20%). Protective clothing eye protection hearing protection dust masks and respirators are provided.
