A police officer provides comprehensive law enforcement and security services to the University of WisconsinParkside this role you will enforce laws and regulations respond to threats investigate complaints and suspicious incidentsmaintainpublic orderassistcommunity members and work collaboratively to address underlying problems. Officersidentifycriminal activity apprehend offenders and serve as a visible approachable presence to promote a safe and peaceful campus. This sworn position (State of Wisconsin LESB certified) supports the departments mission by carrying out essential duties with professionalism integrityimpartiality sensitivityand respect for the rights and dignity of all individuals under the general supervision of the Chief of Police.

The UWParkside Police Department provides 24/7 police and dispatch services to about 5000 students and staff using a community-policing approach focused on student success and safety.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Ensures the safe and orderly flow of traffic on institutional roadways and enforces traffic laws
  • Provides personal safety and crime prevention education to institutional community
  • Performs preliminary and follow-up investigations to solve crimes identify suspects and victims apprehend criminals and document case information
  • Provides protection of life property and the preservation of peace and good order and provides emergency aid to the institutional community
  • Engages in problem solving threat mitigation and conflict resolution for a wide range of issues and incidents involving citizens groups campus entities government agencies businesses leaders and others

Work Schedule:

6:00 PM 6:00 AM and 9:00 PM - 1:00 AM rotating schedule weekly

Required Qualifications:

  • At least 21 years of age by application/appointment

  • United States citizen

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Completion of either an Associate Degree or a minimum of 60 fully accredited college-level credits

  • Completion of a Wisconsin Department of Justice approved Law Enforcement Recruit training course or already certified by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board (LESB) as a Law Enforcement Officer

  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid drivers license with a good driving record

  • No felony or misdemeanor convictions

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of or the ability to learn the functions ofcampuslaw enforcement operations

  • Effective oral and written communication

  • Knowledge of federal state laws and UW System rules

  • Knowledge of current investigatory techniques and procedures

  • Prior customer service experience

Expectations:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to engage respectfully and professionally with students staff visitors and the public

  • Comprehensive knowledge of federal state and local laws including arrest procedures search and seizure evidence handling and use-of-force standards as well as relevant health and safety regulations

  • Proficiencyin current investigative methods and practices.

  • Ability toobserve assess and accurately recall details related to incidents individuals and environments

  • Strong judgment and the ability to quickly evaluate situations and determineappropriate actions

  • Ability to understand and follow complex written and verbal instructions

  • Proven capacity to manage multiple tasks effectively in high-pressure or emergency situations

  • Basic computerproficiency including Microsoft OfficeTraCS and Records Management Systems

  • Skilled in the safe and effective use of law enforcement equipment including firearms enforcement tools and audio/visual devices

Conditions of Appointment:

A criminalbackground checkassessments(psychological physicalandagility) and pre-employmentdrug screening will be conducted on the finalist(s). In addition if the final selected candidate has prior work history within the last 7 years with Universities of Wisconsin a personnel file review check for employee misconduct will be completed. A twelve-month probationary period isfor this position.
