Health Aide (Middle School and High School)

Summary

The Health Aide works under the supervision training and direction of a professional school-registered nurse. Responsibilities include providing healthcare basic life support and first aid to students; performing clerical and secretarial tasks; and completing other duties as delegated by the Registered Nurse. The Health Aide is also responsible for responding to and managing medical emergencies on school grounds.

Description of Job Tasks

  • Attend to students visiting the health office. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
    • Provide health care and/or first aid according to established policies & protocols.
    • Provide support for students mental health needs.
    • Complete pediculosis checks as necessary.
    • Follow established Healthcare Plans and treat students according to their known health conditions. Requires knowledge of reported health conditions for all students in the school.
    • Evaluate students health status to determine appropriate action including transport referral to a healthcare provider exclusion from school due to infectious symptoms or return to class. Consult with the school nurse as needed and collaborate with parents teachers and school administration when appropriate.
    • Administer medications as delegated by the school nurse in accordance with established policies and protocols. Under the delegatory clause receive training from the nurse to administer oral inhaled and injectable medications.
    • Perform delegated medical procedures including but not limited to G-Tube feedings urinary catheterizations bathroom transfers and hygiene care oxygen care and maintenance.
    • Document a comprehensive account of each health office visit in the student information system including reported symptoms observations and assessments medication administration and visit outcome.
  • Respond to medical emergencies on school grounds by providing and directing life-saving care until emergency services arrive. Responsible for managing medical emergencies in accordance with established protocols.
  • Follow student Emergency Action Plans and administer life-saving medications for conditions including but not limited to diabetes seizures life-threatening allergies and asthma.
  • Assist in the prevention and management of communicable diseases within the school setting. Responsibilities include completing daily tracking of student infectious symptoms and communicable disease diagnoses to ensure compliance with exclusion guidelines and to support outbreak monitoring and reporting.
  • Oversee students placed on the Concussion Protocol. Responsibilities include initiating the protocol after assessing a newly diagnosed concussion monitoring student symptoms on an ongoing basis and facilitating clearance from the protocol once symptoms have resolved in collaboration with the school nurse.
  • Manage students on the Concussion Protocol. Includes initiating protocol after assessment of the student with a newly diagnosed concussion continual monitoring of symptoms and clearance from concussion protocol after symptoms resolve in collaboration with the school nurse. Requires consistent communication with parents coaches the athletic director teachers the nurse and administration to provide updates on symptom status recommend academic adjustments and coordinate referrals to healthcare providers as necessary.
  • Maintain student health office records including cumulative health documents immunization records medication orders vision and hearing documents and accident/injury records.
  • Coordinate student health needs between the teacher nurse school administration and parents.
  • Create and distribute the student health concerns list to the necessary staff.
  • Complete accident/incident reports on necessary cases.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the health office. Responsibilities include monitoring and maintaining supply inventory ordering necessary health office supplies in alignment with the established annual budget and adhering to school purchasing protocols.
  • Coordinate and prepare medications for all approved field trips. Duties include tracking scheduled field trips obtaining student rosters from responsible teachers scheduling delegation meetings with the teacher and school nurse and preparing first aid backpacks with all necessary medications to ensure student health and safety on the day of the trip.
  • Manage and maintain student immunization data to ensure compliance with state requirements. Responsibilities include processing and recording immunization records in the student information system notifying parents of non-compliance and facilitating immunization exclusion deadlines under the guidance of the school nurse. This role requires knowledge of immunization schedules and state regulations related to school immunization compliance.
  • Complete monthly tracking of student medication and provider order expiration dates. Communicate with parents to ensure compliance with renewal requirements and maintain accurate up-to-date documentation.
  • Complete monthly AED checks of all AEDs on school grounds.
  • Assist the school nurse in conducting student vision and hearing screenings in compliance with state requirements. Responsibilities include coordinating and scheduling screenings managing the flow of students entering screening data into the student information system completing re-screens as needed compiling referral data sending referral letters to parents in accordance with state law and tracking parent compliance with referrals.
  • Provide initial care for staff injuries occurring on school grounds. Responsibilities include documenting incidents accurately and coordinating the completion and submission of workers compensation claims in accordance with established procedures.
  • Attend all required training sessions and Health Aide meetings and complete assigned online professional development training as needed to maintain compliance and enhance job-related skills.
  • Cover front desk duties when needed.

Licenses Registrations or Certifications

  • Criminal background check required for employment.
  • Administering Medications in a School Setting certification is required.
  • Completion of school health aide training under the School Nurse upon hire.
  • CPR and First Aid certification required upon hire.
  • All personnel must fully complete Windsor Charter Academys safety training ALICE (Alert Lockdown Inform Counter Evacuate). Staff must demonstrate understanding and implementation of these protocols as part of their responsibility to maintain a safe and secure learning environment.

Education and Related Work Experience

  • Associates Degree or higher preferred.
  • Related experience in a school setting.
  • Related experience in a health care setting.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable.
