Job Description

General Summary:

Under the supervision of a registered pharmacist selects and prepares medications fills exchanges and credits unitdose carts and processes drug orders. Answers and screens phones calls. Prepares cytotoxic agents when necessary.

Prepares intravenous injections and admixtures after the successful completion of Lurie Childrens Pharmacys cleanroom training program and under the supervision of a chemotherapy-trained pharmacist prepares antineoplastic (chemotherapy) agents after successful completion of Lurie Childrens Pharmacy chemotherapy training program.

Prepares parenteral injections hazardous agents and IV admixtures at least 50% of the scheduled shifts or successfully completes cleanroom and chemotherapy competencies every six months.

Actively supports the hospitals and departments continuous quality improvement and customer service goals individually and as an effective team member.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Prepares parenteral medications and large volume parenteral as labels demand following strict aseptic technique in the manipulation of ampules vials syringes bottles and bags.
  • Following established guidelines prepares parenteral antineoplastic medications. Works at least one week per 6 months in the Hematology satellite and completes chemotherapy-competency program every six months.
  • Performs the measurements and completes the mathematical calculations necessary for preparing parenteral products.
  • Cleans hoods and calibrates pumps according to established procedures and complies with necessary quality assurance procedures.
  • Stock IV cleanroom and notes low stock items on requisition sheet. Notifies purchasing agent of unusual drug usages.
  • Inspects stock of assigned areas monthly to ensure that medications are stored properly and are in date.
  • Assists with the work activities and training of pharmacy technicians and students on aseptic technique and chemotherapy drug preparation.
  • Takes on and maintains responsibility for special projects after discussing with the Pharmacy Technician Lead and the Pharmacy Manager responsible for the area.
  • Provides in-services and/or continuing education (C.E.) programs to other pharmacy technicians.
  • Maintains physical appearance of the cleanroom.
  • Participates in peer evaluation and evaluation of other pharmacy employees.
  • Adheres to all hospital departmental and regulatory policies and procedures.
  • Performs other tasks as necessary to provide delivery of pharmacy services including processing of new medication orders filling exchanges and crediting carts and selecting and preparing non-intravenous medications.
  • Fills automated dispensing machines in patient care areas to maintain adequate supplies. Fills pharmacy code trays seizure kits and other stock items as necessary for both inpatient and outpatient areas.
  • Triages telephone calls and electronic pharmacy information system messages. Effectively communicates messages to co-workers.
  • Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients families coworkers and others.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • High school diploma required or GED equivalent required. Completion of two years of college with at least one general mathematics course preferred.
  • One year of hospital or home infusion pharmacy experience required and a minimum of six months of Lurie Childrens cleanroom experience and three months of chemotherapy experience with leadership assessment of competency.
  • Maintains certification from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or is currently enrolled in an accredited Doctor of Pharmacy program.
  • Licensure as Registered Pharmacy Technician in the State of Illinois.Certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).
  • Pharmacy students currently enrolled in pharmacy school (PharmD program) are excluded from certification requirements.
  • Work requires good aseptic technique and strong mathematical skills to perform calculations make dilutions and maintain records. Must have data entry skills or ability to learn computer data entry.
  • Must have good interpersonal and communication skills to function within the team concept and interact with tact and courtesy with all hospital employees and customers.
  • Must be able to follow instructions accurately and be capable of following well organized work routine.
  • Must successfully complete an annual validation of aseptic techniques and cytotoxic agent handling including handling of multiple-dispensed sterile bulk products.
  • Must be able to read write and speak English.
  • Must have computer data entry skills or ability to learn computer data entry

Physical Demands:

  • Must have good manual dexterity.
  • Must be able to differentiate colors.
  • Must be able to lift at least 10 pounds.

Pay Range

$26.25-$42.92 Hourly
