GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Under general supervision regulates access to areas within the corrections facility; enforces the policies and procedures associated with adults in custody/visitor conduct and movement within the facility.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works independently with general supervision of a Corrections Sergeant who assigns work establishes goals and reviews results obtained for conformance to sheriffs office standards and overall effectiveness.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Supervision of other employees is not a responsibility of positions in this classification.

Typical Duties - Duties include but are not limited to the following

Security

  • Maintains continual observation of deputies in multiple adults in custody living units to provide critical support specifically in the event of an emergency or risk to the deputy and for the overall safety security and orderly operations of the facility.
  • Observes activities and individuals within an assigned area of the Corrections Facility. Utilizes direct visual scans and closed circuit television monitors to identify potentially serious situations and adults in custody rule violations. Takes prescribed action.
  • Operates touch-screen access control devices. Monitors audible alarms and other visual/ auditory surveillance systems in order to respond appropriately and in a timely manner to situations as they occur.
  • Communicates with other staff via two-way radios and intercoms.
  • Regulates access by adults in custody civilians and staff to assigned areas by remotely opening and closing electronic doors to assist in maintaining security and safety within the facility.
  • Verbally interacts with and visually tracks individuals or groups of adults in custody or civilians within the facility. Inquires about identity purpose and destination and notifies staff of expected activities and movement within the facility.
  • Accesses and inputs data in various computerized systems and databases.
  • Initiates and maintains neat accurate and complete reports; maintains a logbook of activities and checks.
  • Assists in coordination of personal and professional adults in custody visits within the secure perimeter of the facility. Monitors adults in custody visits and phone calls utilizing visual and auditory senses. Initiates audio recordings when necessary.
  • Works in a 24-hour 7-day per week facility with rotating shift schedules and workstations. This includes working a variety of shifts weekends holidays and overtime as required.
  • Verbally communicates with staff adults in custody the public and other criminal justice personnel. This verbal communication sometimes involves using a loud command voice that can be heard over other institutional noises.
  • Remains constantly alert and observant throughout the shift.
  • Negotiates flights of stairs.
  • Dons emergency equipment in a safe and efficient manner for routine training and in crisis situations.
  • Maintains key and equipment control. Controls and coordinates access to and egress from the unit.
  • Monitors audio traffic on the radios telephones and intercoms and acts as a dispatching agent within the unit and to other areas of the facility. Monitors the fire alarm system.
  • Receives headcounts from pod officer and others (e.g. health services staff maintenance workers etc.) and acts as a remote supervision post when the officer is not in the unit.
  • Verbally deals with adults in custody over the intercom to provide instructions or to give directions to maintain the safe secure and orderly operation of the facility.
Administration
  • Maintains adults in custody files in a complete accurate neat fashion and filed alphabetically.
  • Purges files as necessary.
  • Attends and participates in facility and unit briefings.
  • Attends and participates in other meetings and training as required.
  • Initiates and maintains neat accurate and complete reports memos disciplinary reports and logbook entries.
  • Accesses inputs and retrieves electronic mail briefings and other information through the departments automated information system.
  • Adheres to implements and enforces job-related rules policies procedures and post orders in a manner which promotes the safe secure and orderly operation of the facility.
  • Maintains checks and requests supplies as necessary.
  • Assists with any special projects when needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements for the Position

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

  1. Graduation from high school; AND
  2. Two years of employment experience which included utilization of a computer; OR
  3. Any satisfactory combination of work education training or experience relevant to the position as determined by Marion County.
SPECIAL CHARACTERISTICS
  • Ability to pass a background be free of criminal convictions except for minor traffic violations.
  • This is a safety sensitive/special needs position. Final candidates selected for this position will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screen including testing for marijuana. The Marion County Drug and Alcohol Use and Testing Policy can be found at: knowledge of and experience with computers and keyboarding is required.
  • This is a full-time position which is eligible for overtime.
  • This position is represented by a union.
  • Typical Work Schedule: Works in a 24-hour 7-day a week operation. Positions in this classification are required to work rotating shifts subject to call back or other alternative work schedules.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of criminal justice system and role of Correctional Facility (county vs. state); differences between linear and direct supervision models; common day-to-day operation activities of a Correctional Facility (e.g. laundry visiting security checks head counts etc.); and appropriate emergency procedures.Ability to accurately observe adult in custody activities and behaviors; accurately discern a variety of voice transmissions and alarms; exercise sound judgment and make appropriate decisions in emergency and non-emergency situations; follow and enforce written policies/procedures/instructions; respond to emergency situations in a calm and efficient manner; operate different types of security or emergency related equipment; effectively communicate in both oral and written form including the ability to keep accurate records and prepare complete and accurate reports; operate a desktop computer with various software programs and other office equipment; multi-task for extended periods of time; and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers other agencies and the public.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Climbs stairs and/or inclines; sees close and distant objects within normal parameters; sees using peripheral vision; sees at night and in dark or low light settings; demonstrates sufficient depth perception; uses olfactory senses; hears a normal level of speech; speaks clearly; uses a loud voice to shout; sits for up to ½ hour; walks; bends; stoops; crawls; kneels; reaches for and lifts 10 lb. objects; turns neck 90 in either direction; twists body 90 in either direction; works in an area with limited ventilation; works in an area that has chemical agents released into the air; writes legibly; uses hands to grasp handle and manipulate objects; implements finger dexterity; engages in repetitive motion of hands and wrists; works flexible hours during the day and week and works day afternoon evening and night shift work.

PUBLIC SERVICE LOAN FORGIVENESS
Marion County is a qualifying public employer for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. Through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program full-time employees working at the County may qualify for forgiveness of the remaining balance on Direct Student Loans after 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan. VISA SPONSORSHIP
Marion County does not offer VISA sponsorship. Within three days of hireyou will be required to complete the US Department of Homeland Securitys I-9 form confirming authorization to work in the United States.
