Job Summary

Primary Purpose

Support the Opportunity Programs current and potential Southwestern students and staff including SNAP Training & Education Program (STEP) Benefits Navigation (House Bill 2835) Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS) and community resource providers. Assist Opportunity Programs staff with determining eligibility for current and potential students in Coos Curry and Coastal Douglas Counties. Provide guidance to resources as applicable and refer students to additional internal and external partners for support. Assist program participants through completion of programs at Southwestern Oregon Community College (SWOCC) and provide assistance with employment preparation job search and college and career goals.

Description of Essential Functions

Program Outreach (40%)

  1. Communicate regularly with Opportunity Programs staff community partners social service partner agencies and other college departments with shared case management or direct referrals.
  2. Connect students and program participants with tutoring community and campus resources supplemental instruction and employment.
  3. Serve as an advocate for participants in their efforts to navigate campus and overcome institutional and personal barriers.
  4. Assist STEP participants with job search activities and refer as needed to college staff employers and agency partners for internships and job placement assistance.
  5. Travel between Coos and Curry SWOCC campus on a monthly basis to administer Opportunity Programs services.
  6. Collaborate with employers to establish partnerships and create employment opportunities for Opportunity Programs participants.
Program Support (40% of Time)
  1. Monitor persistence towards transition and completion by making frequent contact and developing rapport.
  2. Actively engage in program activities recruitment and trainings both internally and through ODHS (Oregon Department of Human Services) the Community College STEP Consortia WorkSource Oregon and other community-based organizations to include employer site visits external partner locations andtravel to make purchases for student support and other program related needs.
  3. Attend project staff meetings and engage in the planning and evaluation of coaching/support strategies and other activities related to Opportunity Programs.
  4. Provide workshops with topics on skill building (including resumes interview skills job search college navigation etc.) information and referral sources and processes to enhance college and career readiness and goals.
Record Keeping (20% of Time)
  1. Maintain records generate reports enter data provide clerical support for Opportunity Programs and participate in trainings meetings and conference calls.
  2. Track and monitor student and participant progress utilizing an enhanced and trauma-informed case management approach providing individualized coaching and intervention as appropriate to develop successful outcomes.
Perform other duties and special projects as required/assigned

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Associates Degreein sociology psychology human services education or related field.

Two (2) years of experience with the business community or college student services programs related to job development placement and workforce training or advising.

  • Ability to work effectively and sensitively with individuals of diverse cultural backgrounds and perspectives and abilities. Sensitivity to barriers faced by students from economically and/or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of college entrance procedures and programs of study. Knowledge of the world of work assessment testing and the transfer process.
  • Ability to follow established procedures and work independently to accomplish those procedures.
  • Ability and willingness to manage a flexible work schedule with self-discipline including travel various hours and possible weekends/evenings as well as work days at other college locations.
  • Ability to write and communicate at a professional level utilizing a high level of computer skills sufficient to use software such as word processing spreadsheets and data bases to produce correspondence documents and reports as required by the position.
  • Ability to consistently convey a pleasant and helpful attitude by using excellent interpersonal and communication skills to control sometimes stressful and emotional situations. Requires sufficient communication and human relations skills to resolve complaints/issues defuse anger and gain cooperation.
  • Knowledge of Trauma informed person centered practices.
  • Knowledge of materials techniques and resources necessary to assist eligible participants of all ages to overcome barriers and find means to achieve their potential through education.
  • Demonstrated commitment by work experience and/or community involvement in providing services for minority low-income or persons with disability.
  • Ability to travel at various times and distances.
  • Knowledge of teaching with various delivery methods learning styles and group dynamics.
  • Demonstrated interaction with regional industry to address needs of the program and the ability to successfully collaborate with federal state and local partners in education workforce and industry.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of industry workforce needs and educational opportunities.
  • Strict adherence and understanding of Federal State and Community College confidentiality rules and regulations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants for this position possessing one or more of the following knowledge skills and abilities with receive preferred consideration through the selection process:
  • Bachelors degree in sociology psychology human services education or related field.
  • Experience in academic advising.
  • Experience in an educational setting.
  • Experience working on grant-funded programs in higher education.
  • Training in trauma centered practices.
