This advanced Registered Nurse role serves the East Baton Rouge Parish Health Unit delivering public health nursing services in a dynamic clinical setting. The RN actively supports parish-level health unit operations and fulfills assigned duties in alignment with the Louisiana Practice Act (LRS 37:911). This position upholds LDH/Office of Public Health policies promotes a positive and professional image and works collaboratively with the healthcare team. The RN receives administrative direction and functional supervision from the RN Regional Manager.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a current Louisiana Registered Nurse license or a temporary permit or multi-state license issued by a Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC/eNLC) state to practice as a registered nurse plus one of the following:

Two years of experience as a licensed registered nurse; OR

A bachelors degree in nursing plus one year of experience as a licensed registered nurse; OR

A masters degree in nursing or public health plus one year of experience as a licensed registered nurse; OR

A doctorate in nursing or public health.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

  • Provides public health nursing services across all personal health programs within the East Baton Rouge Parish Health Unit including immunizations COVID-19 testing and vaccination reproductive health infectious disease control tuberculosis and Childrens Special Health Services. Delivers direct nursing care in clinics communities shelters and other assigned locations by assisting providers with exams treatments and counseling. Administers medications offers education on medication use and potential reactions and connects individuals and families to community resources. Participates on the Immunization Response Team and accurately documents services in LINKS and the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Delivers comprehensive public health nursing services by conducting nursing and developmental assessments evaluating outcomes of interventions and obtaining and interpreting laboratory specimens. The nurse provides counseling treatment and follow-up care while maintaining OSHA and CLIA standards. The position actively supports Continuous Quality Improvement efforts to ensure high-quality public health and nursing practices. Responsibilities also include responding to community and statewide emergencies such as staffing Medical Special Needs Shelters and participating in Strategic National Stockpile operations within the scope of OPH policies and professional nursing practice. The nurse collaborates with environmental health staff and epidemiologists to perform environmental health assessments related to exposure risks and disease outbreaks and maintains current CPR certification.
  • Delivers health education to individuals families and community groups on preventive care health risks disease outbreaks emergency preparedness and strategies for promoting overall wellness. Supports population-wide health promotion and provides guidance for special medical or home-care needs. Participates in required seminars workshops and continuing education to maintain professional competency. Performs additional duties as assigned by regional leadership.
