Are you passionate about community health and ready to make a difference This is a flex position that can be hired at either the Public Health Nurse 2 or 3 level. Public Health Nurses (PHNs) play a vital role in promoting wellness and protecting Alaska communities such as:
  • Health screenings and preventive care
  • Infectious disease monitoring and treatment
  • Community health assessments and improvement initiatives

As aPHN 2 youll work independently providing a wide range of services to individuals families communities and systems.
As a PHN 3 youll bring expert-level care contribute to quality improvement efforts and travel periodically to outlying communities to deliver care where its needed most.

Public Health Nurse 2:

Eligibility for licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Alaska;

AND

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited college or university or Direct Entry Master of Science (MSN) in Nursing from an accredited college or university.

Special Notes:

Candidates not currently licensed by the State of Alaska who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Alaska and requisite knowledge skills and abilities may apply for vacancies in this job class. Applicants qualifying under this option may receive a conditional job offer; however proof of RN licensure will be required prior to appointment and reporting for duty.

Candidates not actively enrolled but who can provide proof of acceptance into an accredited Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN-to-BSN) bridge program may apply for vacancies in the Public Health Nurse I job class. Continued employment of the successful candidate is contingent upon active enrollment and attendance in the program commencing within six months of initial hire.

Successful performance of this work requires knowledge of principles and concepts of professional nursing public and community health and health care systems typically acquired through a course of study resulting in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Direct Entry Master of Science in Nursing (MSN). Continued employment and advancement from Public Health Nurse 1 to Public Health Nurse 2 is contingent upon maintaining active enrollment in good academic standing and successful completion of an accredited Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN-to-BSN) bridge program within twenty-four months of initial hire including time devoted to completing the enrollment process.

Training and education are synonyms for the process of acquiring knowledge and skills through instruction. It includes instruction through formal and informal methods (such as classroom on-line self-study and on-the-job) from accredited and unaccredited sources and long-duration (such as a post-secondary degree) and short-duration (such as a seminar) programs.

Professional experience means work that is creative analytical evaluative and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the professions principles concepts theories and practices; and is performed with the power or right to decide or act according to ones own judgment.

Progressively responsible means indicating growth and/or advancement in complexity difficulty or level of responsibility.


Public Health Nurse 3:
Eligibility for licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Alaska;

AND

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited college or university or Direct Entry Master of Science (MSN) in Nursing from an accredited college or university;

AND

Any combination of additional education certification and/or experience that provides the applicant with competencies in:

  • Public Health: Applies knowledge of the concepts principles theories methods and tools associated with protecting and improving the health of people and their communities including promoting healthy lifestyles researching disease and injury prevention and detecting preventing and responding to infectious diseases.
  • Decision Making: Makes sound well-informed and objective decisions; perceives the impact and implications of decisions; commits to action even in uncertain situations to accomplish organizational goals; causes change.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Shows understanding friendliness courtesy tact empathy concern and politeness to others; develops and maintains effective relationships with others; may include effectively dealing with individuals who are difficult hostile or distressed; relates well to people from varied backgrounds and different situations; is sensitive to cultural diversity race gender disabilities and other individual differences.
  • Partnering: Develops networks and builds alliances; collaborates across boundaries to build strategic relationships and achieve common goals.

Equivalent to those typically gained by:

Advanced post-secondary education in nursing public health healthcare services healthcare administration or a closely related field that includes masters level study in nursing and/or public health;

AND/OR

Professional experience in public health community health international health and/or occupational health nursing.

Additional Required Information

At the time of the interview please provide the following:

  1. A copy of your current Registered Nurse License (from any state)
  2. Three (3) professional references with current contact information
  3. A copy of academic transcripts (unofficial are okay; please ensure that the institution name/URL is listed on the transcripts) is used to verify that you meet the minimum qualifications

If chosen for the position you will be required to provide the following items prior to employment:

  1. Proof of Tetanus Diphtheria Pertussis (Tdap) Mumps Measles Rubella (MMR) and Varicella immunizations.
  2. Proof of Hepatitis B (immunity or a signed declination statement)
  3. Annual influenza vaccination or a signed declination statement.
  4. Proof of Tuberculosis screening within the past 12 months or upon employment.
  5. A copy of your current drivers license.
  6. A copy of your current Alaska Registered Nurse License upon employment.

The State of Alaska uses four proficiency levels to measure and describe an applicants level of competence in applying certain behaviors knowledge skills and abilities to accomplish a specific task. FLEXIBLY STAFFED
This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the 2 or 3 level depending on the applicants training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level of the position. If filled at a lower level promotion to the higher level will only occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and the required training provided the applicant meets the minimum qualifications of the higher job class and receives final approval from the supervisor.
