The Cowichan Valley Regional District is now accepting applications from prospective candidates to work as a Summer Camp Assistant at the Cowichan Community Centre for summer 2026. This is a great opportunity for those seeking to gain experience in the recreation and childcare field. Our summer positions provide the opportunity for you to learn and be mentored by experienced staff gain valuable coaching feedback/support throughout your employment and gain valuable training courses that can be utilized in our future careers.
Working under the supervision of the Recreation Programmer II the Summer Camp Assistant assists the Summer Camp Leader with running the Summer Camp program ensuring the participants enjoyment and safety. This position assists with: encouraging children in positive & safe play; the general supervision of participants; general set-up/take-down of day camps; and maintaining overall tidiness.
Qualifications
- Preferred candidates are enrolled in school and have completed Grade 10.
- A Basic First Aid with CPR C certificate (if under age 16 the Emergency for Community Care Certificate) is required.
- Theoretical or practical experience with assisting running childrens activities and experience in dealing with children ages 4-12 including safety & prevention and program content & delivery are required.
- The successful candidate is enthusiastic energetic and enjoys working with children.
- The successful candidate also possesses the ability to:
- Establish and maintain a respectful fun relationship with children while maintaining a position of authority.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff managers and the public.
- Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing when communicating with children parents and supervisors including receiving and following directions given regarding work activities.
- Work under supervision as a member of a team.
- Recognize and address liability risks.
- Preference will be given to candidates aged 15-30 years as per the Canada Summer Jobs Program through Service Canada however candidates outside of this age range will be considered.
Hours of Work
This temporary opportunity is available for a period of up to 11 weeks commencing June 22 2026 and continuing until September 4 2026. Hours of work may be scheduled based on enrolment and may vary up to 40 hours per week Monday to Friday. Duration of appointment and hours of work are subject to enrolment and funding. Additional casual on-call opportunities are also available. There may be opportunities to retain casual employment throughout the year if you have a desire to further your work experience in the recreation field.
Salary
This temporary position is unionized (CUPE Local 358) and is compensated at $23.84perhour which is $20.82 per hour plus 6% pay in lieu of benefits 6% pay in lieu of vacation and 2.5% pay in lieu of statutory holidays. (2025 rates)
