Job Description
Reports to: Lead Maintenance Mechanic
Classification: Full Time Non Exempt
Labor Grade: 3 4 or 5 (depending on certification)
Salary: $30.20 per hour - $33.03 per hour (depending on labor grade)
Schedule: Monday Friday / 6:00 am 2:00 pm
General Description:
Under general supervision performs maintenance repairs and upkeep on plant property machines and equipment and assists plant operators; performs other duties as assigned.
Essential Functions:

Primary Responsibilities: (which are not in any hierarchical order)
- Inspects and maintains plant equipment to ensure proper operation.
- Assists Plant Operators in monitoring and adjusting plant operations to ensure water is purified for human consumption and in compliance with EPA regulations.
- Conducts routine maintenance including lubricating and cleaning the water plant equipment maintaining proper operation of belts chains motors gearboxes controls etc.
- Restores processes and equipment to operational conditions.
- Operates city-owned vehicles and equipment.
- Performs confined space duties.
- Utilizes and wears proper protective safety gear and equipment.
- Maintains and logs all repairs and service performed.
- Operates power and hand tools pumps chain drives and flock drives.
- Acts as Plant Operator in their absence. (Fill-in Operator Subject to Shift Changes)
Minimum Qualifications:
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
Education and Training:
Equivalent of a High School Diploma
Experience:
Previous experience or course work in water treatment is desired
License or Certifications:
Valid Drivers License
Possession of Illinois Class C Public Water Supply Water Operators certificate
- Or ability to obtain one within a 12-month period
Knowledge and Abilities:
The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.
Knowledge of:
- Knowledge of water filtration plant processes flow patterns controls and the operation of all treatment equipment.
- Knowledge of OSHA regulations EPA regulations Safe Water Drinking Act and safe work practices.
- Knowledge of the function of hand and power tools.
Ability to:
- Ability to ensure safe work environment.
- Ability to utilize a personal computer and understand software and programs utilized in performing duties.
- Ability to safely handle various process chemicals recognize potential hazards and employ proper procedures and safety equipment.
- Ability to react quickly and make independent decisions regarding various operating conditions.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to work in inclement weather conditions.
- Ability to work odd hours including nights evenings and weekends.
- Ability to effectively communicate with those contacted throughout the course of the workday.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other departments agencies employees supervisors and the public.

Environment:
Works closely with hazardous chemicals and materials mechanical parts and slow-moving equipment. Position is subject to overtime emergency call out working in inclement weather. Physical:
There is a frequent need to stand walk sit climb twist bend stoop talk or hear use hands to finger lift up to and over fifty (50) pounds and perform other similar actions during the course of the workday.
