Job Summary

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Director of Specialty pharmacy and Clinical Development the Clinical Oncology Pharmacy Specialist ensures optimum patient outcomes related to cancer and supportive care medication use by preventing or resolving drug-related issues and optimizing the drug therapy of cancer patients. Provides drug information to patients and families physicians nurses and other healthcare professional. Integrally involved in education of pharmacists residents and students. Strives to increase knowledge through research and writing activities. The Clinical Oncology Pharmacy Specialist may also be involved as necessary in coordinating the acquisition distribution and control of drug therapy for patients under the care of the pharmacist. The Clinical Oncology Pharmacy Specialist is an integral part of cancer care team providing valuable information related to drug monitoring and if necessary will make treatment decisions when necessary as outlined in a collaborative practice agreement.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

  • Responsible for the pharmaceutical care within oncology practice settings; practice setting areas may include one or more of the following: inpatient ambulatory clinic/infusion or specialty pharmacy
  • Be a resource to oversee quality improvement projects formulary decisions and other workflow designs
  • The specialist will be expected to develop a practice within the various ambulatory practice sites and liaison as appropriate with other partners. Such practice should include a collaborative practice agreement in which the pharmacist in accordance with federal state and local statutes and regulations acts an independent practitioner in that the pharmacist evaluates and if necessary makes appropriate treatment modifications
  • Activities include evaluate monitor and modify drug therapy provide recommendations to optimize patient outcomes provide patients with new medication education minimize safety issues and assure cost effectiveness as well as provide drug information for medical personnel
  • The pharmacist will be expected to collaborate with various stakeholders to ensure accreditation and/or statutory requirements are being met including but not limited to URAC Joint Commission FACT
  • Evaluate monitor and modify drug therapy and if applicable prescribe or discontinue treatments when necessary and when outlined under the collaborative practice agreement
  • Provide patients with new medication education
  • Coordinate pharmacotherapy activities and educational opportunities for department pharmacists and residents in the ambulatory practice setting
  • Participates in medication formulary review
  • Assist with collection and presentation of patient outcomes data.
  • Staffs in pharmacy-driven clinical services as directed to the Oncology Pharmacy Manager. Services can include but is not limited to CINV adherence and intravenous iron programs

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

Doctor of Pharmacy/Bachelor of Pharmacy from accredited school of Pharmacy.

CERTIFICATES LICENSES REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

  • MA pharmacist license required by the hire date
  • Board certification in Oncology (BCOP) obtained within 12 months of hire date OR if applicable within 24 months of hire date if employee just completed PGY2 ASHP accreditation in Oncology within 6 months of hire date

EXPERIENCE:

  • PGY2 in Oncology or Internal medicine ASHP accredited program OR
  • PGY 1 ASHP accredited program AND 1 year of oncology related experience (3 years preferred) with a demonstrated skillset involving formulary committee policy and procedure development cancer-related quality improvement project OR 3 years (5 years preferred) of oncology related practice experience with a demonstrated skillset involving formulary committee policy and procedure development cancer-related quality improvement project

Compensation Range:

$113500.00- $164500.00

This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. However our approach to determining base pay is comprehensive and a broad range of factors is considered when making an offer.
