Job description

DeustoTech Deusto Institute of Technology is the technological research centre of the University of Deusto located on the Bilbao campus whose mission is to promote research training and knowledge transfer at the service of society and industry.

DeustoTech offers an exceptional opportunity for predoctoral researchers interested in the field of energy performance of buildings and built environments. Several topics such as integration of renewable energies improvement of building envelopes and building HVAC systems are considered mainly through a data-driven perspective.

Position:

We are seeking a research assistant in energy engineering with expertise in building energy simulation calibration of building thermo-energy models and HVAC systems model-based control applications energy data analytics and electricity price formation processes.

The successful candidate will develop models calibration procedures and controllers with the ultimate goal of optimizing the energy performance of buildings and other energy assets. These should comprise:

  • Engineering modelling
  • Statistical analysis and model calibration
  • Developing testing and validation of computer codes.

The candidate is expected to be capable of structuring and carrying out research activities interacting with external collaborators within the framework of collaborative projects and engaging with the internal team. Particularly:

  • Interaction with data providers for model definition and calibration
  • Integration with partners dealing with asset management and optimization for the correct formulation of models calibration processes and energy optimization problems.
  • Interaction with ICT technicians in Deusto regarding the extraction and integration of data into data structures and transferring research code for integration into automated calibration services.
  • Understanding and accessing data sources such as public offices (municipal/regional cadasters building taxonomies energy inventories) weather data services and energy suppliers (consumption data) to get contextual data from models.

The above mentioned activities are well- aligned and with sufficient scientific aim to deliver a PhD thesis in the field of Energy in the Built Environment.

The candidate will participate also in communication and dissemination of the scientific results in conferences seminars and workshops both national and international as well as publications in scientific journals.

Requirements

Background:

Energy engineering or equivalent Master Degree.

Capacities:

  • Understanding of energy systems in buildings and urban environments.
  • Programming skills. At least basic knowledge of Python and/or R.
  • Fluent in English (requirement) and Spanish (highly valued).
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment and adapt to different research challenges.
  • Good level of written and spoken English.

Valuable items:

  • Expertise in international context (erasmus) or multi-stakeholder environments (some business experience).
  • Expertise in scientific publication.
  • Understanding of public registers (cadasters etc).
  • Basic skills in Geographic Information Systems.
  • Good level of written and spoken Spanish.

2.1 Enrollment at a University of Deusto PhD programme or the admissions letter for the 2025/2026 academic year.

2.2 Official academic transcript of previous official university studies (1st and 2nd cycle) even if they are currently being taken issued by the corresponding unit. The academic certificate must state the name of the degree programme the subjects that make up the course syllabus the subjects passed the grades obtained and the dates on which they were obtained. The transcript should show the average mark from 0 to 10.

If the studies have been completed abroad an official academic certificate must be submitted as well as a sworn translation thereof provided that it is not in one of the two co-official languages of the Basque Autonomous Community or in all cases the certificate or other supporting document must state the maximum and minimum grades within the corresponding assessment system and the minimum grade required to addition the Statement of equivalence of average grade of the Spanish Ministry of Education Culture and Sport (MECD) or ANECAs official certificate indicating the average grade of the academic transcript within the Spanish evaluation system must be submitted.
