Through the performance of a variety of technical and routine tasks the Medical Clinical Associate contributes to patient care in an ambulatory setting under the direction and supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse and within the policies of the Department of Nursing and The Mount Sinai Hospital.
Assists in patient care by performing the following:Obtains and records vital signs. Collects and processes blood urine sputum and stool specimens. Reports changes in patient parameters or unusual values to the Registered Professional Nurse or physician. Provides assistance with procedures such as stocking exam rooms with appropriate supplies.
Assists in the collection of screening data i.e. personal data chief complaints past present family and social history. Collects specimens for selected tests that assist with diagnosis treatment: urine pregnancy tests throat cultures and hemocult. Participates with follow-up of abnormal lab data as directed by the Registered Professional Nurse or physician. Applies principles of aseptic technique and infection control including the use of protective gear. Assists with the procurement of equipment and supplies. Orients patients to ambulatory clinic policies and procedures.
Handles all information in accordance with patient confidentiality patients with empathy and impartiality. Communicates in a courteous and positive manner. Relates positively to patients family and staff within the organization. Gives verbal reports to designated RNs and/or MDs. Reports all problems to Clinical Nurse Manager.
Attends JCAHO and mandatory inservice and educational programs within the department and hospital. Adheres to departmental policies procedures and practices. Participates actively in unit based interdisciplinary meetings. Participates in projects and programs carried out within the department. Assists with the preparation and maintenance of medical records. Participates in the continuous quality improvement activities of the unit. Assists in the operational functioning of the unit by insuring inventory needs of equipment and supplies. Locates resources and information for patients and family.

Education Requirements
High School Diploma/GED with completion of Training Certificate from an approved Medical Assistant certificate course. Certified Medical Assistant preferred.
