Environment and Planning division aims to protect restore and expand New York City Parks including green spaces and natural areas to maximize their benefits for environmental and community health and resilience. The Natural Resources Group (NRG)s mission is to protect restore expand and manage New York Citys over 12000 acres of natural spaces and green infrastructure across the five boroughs including forests grasslands and wetlands.
Major Responsibilities
-Under the direction of the Director of Research and Monitoring and with considerable latitude for independent judgement supervise a group of project managers and ecologists.
-Support the management of a holistic monitoring and research program collaborate with staff in the division to maximize impact and influence on natural areas management and collaborate with researchers at a wide range of institutions in NYC and the region.
-Manage the Monitoring Project Tracker which involves coordinating with project managers to add and update information on in-house monitoring and research projects.
-Provide supervision and training on study design field surveys statistical and other data analysis and report and presentation preparation by staff
-Collaborate with Environment & Planning staff to co-design monitoring projects to improve planning protection design and management of natural areas
-Provide scientific expertise and assistance to Environment & Planning staff and collaborators develop partnerships with potential project stakeholders -- including community groups and external researchers as appropriate -- and represent NYC Parks at interagency working groups related to natural resources protection and management.
-Review designs and construction documents for Capital projects by Parks and other agencies as well as policy and plan proposals for potential impacts to parkland including the Citys forests wetlands and grasslands and individual species using parkland as habitat.
-Prepare reports literature reviews policy recommendations and other summaries of technical information for funders collaborators the agency and the public.
-Support outreach for other work happening within the division with local park managers local community groups and other agencies.

Qualifications :
1. For Assignment Level I (only physical biological and environmental sciences and public health) A masters degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical biological or environmental science or in public health.
To be appointed to Assignment Level II and above candidates must have:
1. A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical biological environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
2. A masters degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical biological environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to 1 or 2 above. However all candidates must have at least a masters degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in 2 above. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in 1 and 2 above.
