The Opportunity

Under the direction of the Applications Supervisor the Applications Officer is responsible for the provision of information to the general public concerning eligibility of applicants verifying application information assessing housing applications preparing reports recommending the approval or denial of applications and assigning applicants to units. The incumbent is also responsible for processing all transfer requests from existing applicants and identifying potential applicants where possible vacancy loss exists.

Responsibilities

  • Provide general information concerning public housing to applicants potential applicants general public and third parties as appropriate.
  • Screen applications for eligibility and provide recommendations regarding suitability of applicants.
  • Advise applicants regarding their application and wait list placements.
  • Identify and refer applicants who may be eligible for priority selection for housing.
  • Provide where practical information to applicants regarding suitable alternate housing programs.
  • Conduct home visits where appropriate for the purpose of confirming eligibility reviewing suitability and determining housing requirements.
  • Prepare necessary follow-up letters and reports after completing home visits in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Respond to correspondence in a timely manner.
  • Prepare and maintain up-to-date applicant files and applicant status including maintaining timely record of applicant contracts.
  • Select applicants for available units on a timely basis in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that application updates are carried out in accordance with established policies.
  • Managing transfers on the waitlist.

What youll need

Qualifications

Must Have

  • Successful completion of a diploma program in a related field plus four years related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Sound analytical skills judgement and discretion are required to respond to inquiries to prioritize work to meet month end year-end and other transaction/reporting deadlines.
  • Strong keyboarding skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Office with intermediate to excellent skills in Microsoft Excel.
  • Excellent knowledge of office procedures and practices are required to maintain accurate and secure files track and follow-up information/report requests and manage petty cash.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills to set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Good knowledge of Housing Authority policies procedures and practices is required to respond accurately to inquiries from internal or external sources applicants and tenants.
  • Client service oriented with communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Interpersonal skills to deal with co-workers tenants contractors and vendors other departments and the public in a positive tactful courteous and cooperative manner.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision as well as in a team environment.
  • Works cooperatively with others and displays a positive attitude to further the goals of the organization.
  • Ability to exercise tact discretion sound judgment and initiative when investigating questioning and dealing with inquires requests and submissions that are sensitive and confidential in nature.
  • Adaptable to change as the job requires and is receptive to new ideas and willing to try new methods and approaches.

Nice to Have

  • Working knowledge of Yardi Property Management software is an asset.

Occasional travel may be required within the Western District.
