Your role

As a Special Effects Technician you are responsible for designing preparing supplying and executing special effects consulting directly with requesters to determine their special effects needs and conducting the necessary research.

Key responsibilities:

  • Review and analyze requests and research complementary information; clarify and confirm ideas with the appropriate parties as required; ensure you have full and accurate details information and instructions to determine special effects.

  • Design special effects (e.g. pyrotechnics water effects flame systems) and determine the mechanical logic required; draft the necessary technical plans sketches and blueprints for their creation.

  • Advise on and suggest special effects to enhance the final product.

  • Provide clear instructions and specifications to painters set builders and other tradespeople to ensure the effects are incorporated correctly.

  • Obtain materials from Corporate stores or contact external suppliers to purchase rent or borrow the necessary items while adhering to production budgets.

  • Fabricate or assemble scenic elements and special effects devices repairing modifying installing camouflaging maintaining and dismantling them as needed.

  • Perform the work required to fabricate special effects (plumbing wiring welding etc.).

  • Prepare and present as needed cost submissions and estimates for labour and materials.

  • Ensure strict adherence to safety protocols during the operation of effects.

  • File applications for authorization to use firearms and explosives in compliance with current regulations and legislation.

  • Conduct performance and safety tests on special effects.

  • Ensure that special effects components are handled and transported with care; check their condition recommending any necessary repairs or modifications; handle and transport (or arrange transportation of) equipment and devices ensuring they are delivered and returned.

  • Retrieve or ensure retrieval of all materials used.

  • Operate special-effects devices and teach others how to do so.

  • Assist as needed in executing work and setting up special effects.

  • Conduct the necessary research and consultations to meet specific special-effects requests.

  • Maintain provided tools performing any necessary repairs; report on their operating condition if need be.

  • Fabricate moulds for special effects.

  • Attend planning or production meetings as needed.

  • Report any breakdowns or defects in equipment or material to the relevant people.

  • Complete the appropriate forms and documents; share information verbally or in writing to ensure proper follow-up and to keep others informed.

  • Familiarize other employees with their duties and work environment.

  • Carry out as needed all or part of the duties of another job classification within an equivalent or lower salary group as well as other related duties.

Relationships:

  • Report to the appropriate supervisor or others depending on the assignment.

  • Maintain relationships internally and externally.

Please note this an on call position and you may be required to work early morning late evening or weekend assignments.

Your profile:

  • High school diploma

  • Four (4) years experience required to perform duties satisfactorily and become proficient with special effects including pyrotechnics smoke etc.
