** This is a full-time 12-month Postdoctoral Fellow position which will begin September 10th 2026. The opening is for a one-year fellowship. We will accept applications until January 2nd 2026 at 11:59 pm. The designated CHD (Common Hold Date) will be Monday February 23 2026. **
Central State Hospital (CSH) is a 277 bed Joint Commission accredited psychiatric inpatient facility located in Petersburg Virginia. CSH has proudly been serving citizens of the Commonwealth since 1870 when we opened our doors as the first psychiatric hospital in the country dedicated to the treatment of African Americans. A new and modern CSH is currently under construction on the same property with a scheduled completion date of 2027.
CSH maintains the only maximum-security treatment facility in the state (111 beds). We also have 166beds available for individuals in the community who need inpatient care as well as individuals in the criminal justice system. We believe that treatment should be holistic and focused on the persons individual needs recognizing that recovery is not linear or the same for every person. Treatment modalities may include medication evidence-based group and individual therapy peer support psychosocial rehabilitation vocational training preparation for court and treatment for substance use.
Central State Hospital is recruiting for a Post-Doctoral Fellow to join our Psychology Department. This position primarily performs forensic evaluations largely competency to stand trial and sanity at the time of the alleged offense although other forensic related evaluations also occur. The employee will act as a resource to other staff relevant to forensic psychological services and will lead the weekly Case Law addition this employee will be expected to be an informed consumer of research.

Minimum Qualifications
Required:
- Doctoral Degree Must be Attained by Start of Fellowship Date
- Requires Basic Knowledge in the Area of Clinical Assessment Report Writing and Consultation Relevant to Forensic Evaluations
- Must Demonstrate Competence and Knowledge in Psychopathology Personality Theory and the Assessment Process.
