Job Summary: The Cardio Surgical ICU Registered Nurse provides highly specialized complex care to postoperative cardiac surgery patients including those recovering from open-heart procedures and advanced cardiac interventions. This role requires expert-level critical care skills strong clinical judgment and the ability to respond rapidly in high-acuity environments. The RN collaborates closely with cardiothoracic surgeons intensivists perfusionists and multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe evidence-based care. This is a 36-hour/week night shift (7:00 PM 7:30 AM) position.
Responsibilities
- Deliver comprehensive high-acuity nursing care to post open heart and complex cardiac surgical patients.
- Monitor hemodynamics cardiac rhythms ventilators chest tubes drips IABP and other advanced cardiac support devices as applicable.
- Perform frequent assessments and intervene promptly in emergencies or clinical deterioration.
- Administer medications manage vasoactive infusions and titrate drips based on provider orders and patient response.
- Collaborate with cardiothoracic surgery teams cardiac intensivists and support services to coordinate and implement care plans.
- Document all assessments interventions and outcomes accurately in EPIC (highly preferred).
- Educate patients and families about surgery recovery medications and postoperative expectations when appropriate.
- Maintain strict adherence to infection control safety protocols and evidence-based CSICU standards.
- Participate in shift handoffs multidisciplinary rounds and unit-based quality initiatives.
- Manage a caseload aligned with CSICU patient acuity and staffing guidelines.
Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of Cardio Surgical ICU or Cardiac ICU experience in a hospital setting Required
- Minimum 2 years of overall RN experience Required
- Strong clinical expertise in post open heart and cardiac critical care
- EPIC EMR experience highly preferred
- Excellent communication critical thinking and rapid-response abilities
Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Required
Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) Required
License: Active New York State RN License Required
