Job Summary The Surgical Technician participates as a key member of the Health Care Team in the Operating Room delivering high-quality culturally sensitive patient care that aligns with Kaiser Permanentes mission vision and values. This role performs in the scrub capacity during surgical procedures-specifically open-heart surgery-and helps maintain a safe organized and efficient operating environment. The technician collaborates closely with surgeons nurses and other OR staff to support excellent surgical outcomes and ensure continuity of care.
Essential Responsibilities Professional Practice & Conduct -
Complies with all shift unit and organizational policies including attendance and time-keeping standards.

Maintains confidentiality of patient and organizational information (HIPAA).

Demonstrates professional communication collaboration and teamwork.

Participates in staff meetings in-services and unit-based Quality Assurance programs.

Maintains up-to-date skills and knowledge; engages in continuous professional development.
Patient Assessment & Communication -
Ensures continuity of care by communicating effectively with patients families and staff.

Participates in the pre-operative briefing and surgical time out.
-
Provides continuous intra-operative reassessment and anticipates team needs.
Surgical Preparation & Planning Intra-Operative Responsibilities -
Performs duties in the scrub role using proper aseptic technique.

Evaluates sterile packs and supplies to maintain sterility and safety.
-
Maintains an organized sterile field throughout procedures.
-
Anticipates surgeon and team needs during surgery.
-
Assists with patient positioning and transfers while maintaining proper body alignment.
-
Applies protocol-based measures for intra-operative patient management.
-
Assists in emergency situations as needed.
Equipment & Instrumentation -
Inspects instruments for contamination and transports used instruments appropriately.
-
Executes sterile core duties including picking case carts restocking and ordering supplies.
-
Supports room turnover with light housekeeping equipment procurement and supply restocking.
-
Participates in reprocessing of instruments and supplies.
Qualifications Basic Qualifications -
Graduate of an accredited School of Surgical Technology.

Required Certifications (at hire):

Knowledge of sterile technique operating room procedures sterile core processes and OR equipment.
-
Ability to follow direction exercise sound judgment demonstrate manual dexterity and maintain effective working relationships.
Preferred Qualifications -
2 to 5 years of scrubbing experience across inpatient or ambulatory OR settings.

Experience rotating through the sterile core area.
-
Skilled in instrument cleaning/reprocessing stocking supplies and picking case carts.
