How your work would contribute to our organization and the Twin Cities region:

The Senior Technical Trainer is responsible for the analysis design development delivery and evaluation of technical training for all employees within Bus Maintenance. This individual will need to be able to quickly grasp complex technical concepts and make them easily understandable in the form of a presentation and this position youll have an opportunity to combine your technical expertise to teach new students to learn job skills and help our maintenance technicians improve their job performance.


This position will establish a six (6) month eligibility pool for current and future openings. It will remain open until all positions are filled. Applications will be reviewed on a weekly basis.

What you would do in this job

  • Design and develop course outlines syllabi performance objectives student guides classroom slides lab exercises performance support tools standard operating procedures service bulletins and evaluation documents.
  • Deliver technical training to maintenance personnel at local facilities for all three shifts.
  • Continually evaluate course effectiveness and update materials as needed.
  • Create project plans and manage multiple priorities with multiple deadlines.
  • Prepare the classroom equipment training modules materials etc. prior to class.
  • Maintain/organize materials and equipment both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Provide technical support to maintenance technicians upon request.
  • Maintain control of the learning environment through effective classroom management techniques.
  • Seek out industry trends on new training tools and strategies.
  • Act as Garage Supervisor as needed.
  • Conduct pre-hire testing for internal and external maintenance candidates.
  • Miscellaneous duties as assigned.

What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)

A bachelors degree in a mechanical field training and development communications or other related field; AND four (4) years of experience as a technical instructor reporting into a technical/mechanical training department with a focus on course development instructional design adult learning concepts as well as delivery of training. Work experience must include one year of supervisory or lead experience.

OR

An associate degree in a mechanical field training and development communications or other related field; AND six (6) years of experience as a technical instructor reporting into a technical/mechanical training department with a focus on course development instructional design adult learning concepts as well as delivery of training. Work experience must include one year of supervisory or lead experience.

OR

A high school diploma or GED; ANDeight (8) years as a technical instructor reporting into a technical/mechanical training department with a focus on course development instructional design adult learning concepts as well as delivery of training. Work experience must include one year of supervisory or lead experience.


Metropolitan Council Employees Only:Successful completion of any one of the following four Metropolitan Council Leadership/Supervisory training programs will substitute for lead/supervisory experience. You must attach your certificate(s) as proof of completion of the program to you application. Only completion of one of the four programs listed below will substitute credit (6 months or 1 year) for lead/supervisory experience.

Metro Transit Leadership Academy 1 year

Project Management Development Program (12-month session) 1 year
Project Management Development Program (6-month session) 6 months

Four Learning Institute Certificates - You must obtain all four certificates listed below to receive credit for 6 months supervisory experience.

  • Leading Self-Personal Effectiveness Certificate
  • Leading Self-Communication Certificate
  • Leading Self-Business Skills Certificate
  • Leading Others-Preparing for Supervisor Certificate

What additional skills and experience would be helpful in this job (desired qualifications):
  • Experience as a technical instructor at a school or structured training department conducting hands on and classroom instruction.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office (Word Excel and PowerPoint).
  • Experience in advanced technical and mechanical ability and aptitude in vehicle maintenance.
  • Experience in advanced course development in a technical or mechanical area (prefer bus maintenance).
  • Experience in advanced technical or mechanical instructional design.
  • Experience in training using adult learning concepts.
  • Experience in advanced technical or mechanical classroom facilitation and training.

License Requirement:
  • Valid drivers license with acceptable driving record.


What knowledge skills and abilities you should have within the first six months on the job:

  • Knowledge of maintenance and repair of Cummins diesel engines Allison EV drives Allison Voith and ZF transmissions pneumatic hydraulic steering suspension AC/DC electrical systems multiplexing systems HVAC systems and digital electronics.
  • Learn new products and technology quickly.
  • Knowledge of adult learning concepts.
  • Build strong working relationships in and out of the department.
  • Self-sufficient self-starter with proven success taking ownership of training projects.
  • Excellent written oral and interpersonal skills.
  • Skilled in group facilitation and classroom instruction.
  • Experience working in a unionizedenvironment.
  • Ability to create and develop training courses.

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Safety Sensitive: Yes. Subject to random DOT drug tests.

What your work environment would be:
Work is frequently performed in an indoor environment. However the position may require occasional outdoor work with exposure to weather conditions. Work may require local travel to conduct training at various facilities. Work occasionally requires out-of-state travel to attend training and conferences. Work is performed periodically near moving parts vehicles lifting equipment and occasionally elevated positions. Position may result in exposure to noise diesel exhaust emissions welding fumes and risk of electrical shock. Requires work in varying hours to accommodate all three shifts. Position is regularly required to speak hear read and write and has vision requirements (close distance peripheral depth perception ability to distinguish colors and ability to adjust focus).

The Metropolitan Council considers felony gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor convictions on a case-by-case basis based on whether they are related to the job and whether the candidate has demonstrated adequate rehabilitation.
