Position Summary
This position is responsible for performing journeyperson level duties in the mechanical service maintenance and repair of all types of heavy truck and transport vehicles and other associated equipment. This position reports to the Trades Coordinator.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Inspects maintains overhauls and services all types of trucks and specialized bodies.
- Performs assessments and/or conduct tests to determine vehicle problems.
- Performs repairs to all vehicle/equipment systems (hydraulics brakes diesel/gas engines including injectionsystems Allison automatic transmissions manual transmissions drive lines cooling electrical etc.)
- Performs SGI Safety Inspections on heavy trucks.
- Assesses condition of vehicle parts and components and submits replacement order lists.
- Conducts operational and/or road testing of completed repairs and final adjustments to meet equipmentperformance standards.
- Provides advice training and supervision of trades staff and apprentices ensuring work assignments arecompleted in accordance with department guidelines and policies; participates in hiring and performancemanagement activities
- Assists in organizing shop activities directs and ensures availability of labor space materials partsequipment and supplies to accomplish assigned work orders and projects.
- Performs various record maintenance duties including work orders materials and supplies utilized costestimates labor required maintenance logs etc.
- Performs related work as required.
Key Qualifications
- The knowledge skills and abilities required for this position are obtained through successful completion of a Journeypersons Certificate in Truck and Transport combined with a minimum two (2) years experience in the heavy truck or automotive industry (preferably at the journeyperson level).
- Experience in the use of computerized maintenance management systems and computerized tools
- Candidates must possess or be willing to complete a recognized supervisory development program along with the Blue Seal Certificate Candidates must participate in the required training and be willing and able to successfully complete recognized certification programs and courses to perform the work and maintain status (I.e. Canadian Management Centre Communication Skills for Strong Work Relationships) (City of Reginas Management Skills Series)
- Knowledge of fuel air brakes electrical hydraulic lubricating cooling ignition injection transmission and differential systems kKnowledge of diesel and gasoline engine systems.
- Ability to effectively use all testing and diagnostic equipment perform difficult mechanical repairs without technical direction or supervision.
- Ability to read and interpret related technical information and complete required reports direct train and provide support to other Tradespersons and apprentices.
- Ability to plan and organize work along with communicating effectively in oral and written form establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors team members co-workers suppliers and the general public.
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team exercising sound judgement and decision making.
- Able to perform work of a physical nature in all types of weather conditions skill to accurately diagnose and repair mechanical defects in all types of truck and truck-mounted equipment.
- Knowledge of supervisory and leadership principles and effective practices assign delegate and schedule work of staff and self organizing and prioritizing multiple changing work demands while considering workloads employee skill and operational requirements.
- Ability to express ideas effectively both orally and in writing in a communication style adaptable to various situations
- Skill in scheduling work to maximize work productivity measure work output against standards and adjust resources allocations as necessary.
Working/Other Conditions
- Must possess or be eligible to obtain certification as an SGI Inspection Technician.
- Must possess a set of mechanics tools as required in the trade.
- Must possess a valid class 1A drivers license.
- The employee will be required to work both inside and outside year-round. Shift work will be required. Maybe assigned to work in any of the following functional areas of mechanics: Heavy Truck Light Equipmentand Heavy Duty.

- Successful candidates may be required to provide a satisfactory criminal record check per the City of Reginas Criminal Record Check Policy.
- Proof of education is required.
- Additional assessments may be conducted to evaluate competencies skills and knowledge.
