What Youll Do

  • Provide expert level technical support to material generators in matters of chemical waste management especially chemical characterization focused on labpacking and/or chemicals being shipped off site to commercial Treatment Storage and Disposal Facilities (TSDFs).
  • Possess a strong foundation in chemistry that will be essential for identifying and understanding chemical properties as will the ability to consult Safety Data Sheets (SDS) compatibility charts and compatibility databases to ensure that different materials do not react violently when stored or transported together.
  • Familiarity with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rules under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA).
  • Possess a working knowledge of waste acceptance criteria and waste profiles established by Y-12 Waste Management for approved TSDFs.
  • Represents Generator Services in Production facilities and in support of Project/Infrastructure related work performed across the site.
  • Interfaces with waste generators to identify scope of excess chemicals to be generated as waste and then facilitates evaluations to specify efficient and compliant characterization and packaging schemes.
  • Coordinates with functional support groups (e.g. Radcon Transportation Waste Management Environmental Compliance) to manage excess chemical material generated across the Y-12 site.
  • Determines packaging requirements for compliant transportation and disposal.
  • Must be familiar with the specific regulations for labpack combination packaging including container size limitations the use of compatible absorbent materials packaging performance standards and proper understanding of how to segregate chemicals based on their hazard class packing group and proper shipping name according to DOT regulations.
  • Prepare supporting chemical and radiological characterization documents.
  • Determine chemical compatibilities.
  • Candidate may spend 50% of time in support of field activities that will include climbing ladders and stairs with the balance performing administrative duties.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelors degree: Minimum 2 years of relevant experience.
  • OR Masters degree: Minimum 1 year of relevant experience.
  • OR PhD.
  • In addition the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e. Baccalaureate in engineering or related scientific major 2 years job-related and 1-year nuclear experience; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative).

Preferred Job Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in engineering/science/information technology discipline.
  • Masters degree in engineering/science/information technology discipline.
  • Previous experience with chemical and radiological waste characterization treatment packaging transportation and disposal of waste generated at Department of Energy nuclear facilities.
  • Specific expertise in chemical characterization and labpacking schemes is desirable.
  • Previous experience with interpretation of analytical data for the purpose of determining regulatory status.
  • Formal training related to radioactive waste management DOT RCRA Polychlorinated Biphenyls and Radiological Worker II is desired.

Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.

This position may require entry into the Material Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (10 C.F.R. Part 712) which requires successful competition of a DOE counterintelligence evaluation and may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination.
