Summary:
Serves as an integral part of the Occupational Health and Safety team promoting a safe and healthful work environment free from recognized hazards that may cause serious injury physical harm or death. Routinely inspects evaluates and documents site conditions at MWRA facilities including but not limited to equipment tools and machines for compliance with safety protocols regulations and Massachusetts law requiring public sector entities to comply with OSHA standards. Responds to emergencies to mitigate danger and loss. Inspects and distributes equipment to prevent work-related injuries and illnesses.

Key Responsibilities
Inspection:
- Conducts monthly visual check inspections of facility fire extinguishers AED Devices first aid stations emergency eyewash stations and personal protective equipment (earplug) stations. Proper equipment ensures compliance with OSHA standards and limits exposure to corrosive materials chemicals or particulates.
- Ensures hand-held gas monitors are fully charged daily and inspected/adjusted on a monthly basis by the calibration lab.
- Conducts routine safety observations and inspections of MWRA facilities buildings and construction and work sites
Documentation and Safety Recommendations:
- Documents the worksite hazardous conditions and concerns.
- Recommends safety improvements to the Safety Manager and Safety Program Manager.
- Notifies Safety Manager or Safety Program Manager of deficiencies such as leaks tampering expired or otherwise non-operational safety equipment.
- Maintains records of inspection and maintenance on operations safety equipment such as eye wash stations and fire extinguishers and provides reports to the Safety Manager or other managers as requested.
- Maintains and updates the OSHA-required safety data sheets (SDS) in binders located throughout the facility.
- Distributes existing safety procedures and guidelines upon request.
Inventory:
- Responsible for all safety equipment stock supply including fire extinguishers ear plugs and first aid supplies.
- Maintains a record of safety equipment stock levels replenishes and distributes safety supplies including fire extinguishers ear plugs and first aid supplies (no equipment/ supplies for eye wash or AED).
- Identifies and orders other needed safety supplies.
- Ensures adequate supply of safety bags (including hard hat and safety glasses) for new hires.
Vendor Management:
- Serve as primary liaison to contract expert safety vendors who perform annual inspection of fire extinguishers (required for OSHA compliance) and AED equipment. Accompanies vendors during annual inspections and initiates work order or contacts vendor during the year if corrective maintenance is required.
Required Qualifications
- An Associates degree in a technical or business field and at least three years of experience in an industrial or commercial environment; or
- A high school diploma and at least five years experience in an industrial or commercial environment; or
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid Massachusetts Class D Drivers License.
- Completion of 40-hour OSHA Hazardous Waste Site Worker Certification within 6 months.
- Annual 8-hour OSHA Refresher course once in the position.
- This position has been designated as essential in instances where the MWRA Executive Director requires essential personnel to report to work such as inclement weather and other emergencies.
Knowledge and Abilities
- Understanding of key workplace safety practices and principles.
- Familiarity with fire and electrical work practices is preferred.
- Ability to inspect facilities for equipment and initiate appropriate follow-up.
- Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
- Attention to detail.
- Possesses a high level of safety consciousness and awareness.
- Basic knowledge of OSHA coverage and ability to follow protocols on safety reporting.
- Experience on safety committees confined space entry training instruction or serving on emergency safety response or safety drill team preferred.
