Summary
The Recreation Intern will assist in the planning leading managing troubleshooting and evaluating recreational events programs and facilities.
TheRecreation Intern is responsible for performing the essential functions as outlined in this analysis. The Recreation Intern is a seasonal full-time non-exempt employee. Hours may fluctuate to accommodate evening and/or weekend programs or events. Driving is part of the employees responsibilities as they may transport self or participants to from and during some activities. This is an at-will position.
Immediate Supervisor
Superintendent of Recreation
Essential Functions
- Perform all job task within policies and procedures of the Park Districts Personnel and Safety manuals.
- Attend staff meetings and complete in-service training sessions.
- Work within recreation programming areas for all ages.
- Assist with the development of the seasonal brochure.
- Learn the operations of all departments of the park district and execute duties in each area.
- Oversee selected programs.
- Design and develop new recreation programs.
- Assist with compiling information for seasonal program analyses.
- Understand the aspects of the budget and assist with payroll bills payable etc.
- Become familiar with our special recreation organization (WDSRA).
- Adhere to all park district and program policies and procedures.
Marginal Functions
- Assist with the safety program and attend all safety meetings.
- Attend board meetings and IPRA committee meetings.
- Design and prepare bulletin boards flyers and other marketing tools as needed.
- Participate in an intern swap day.
- Plan and assist with special events and projects.
- Drive a car truck and/or minibus for work purposes.
Schedule
40 hours per week plus additional hours as needed. Schedule may vary based on program requirements. Some flexibility available.
Starting Pay Rate
$16.00 to $19.00 per hour depending on qualifications and experience.
Qualifications
Qualifications
- Must be a college student majoring in Recreation Sports Management or a related field which has an intern requirement for graduation.
- Basic knowledge of the recreation industry.
- A valid Illinois Drivers License is required along with a safe driving record and ability to pass a defensive driving course.
- CPR AED and First Aid certification or ability to obtain this certification within three months of employment is required.
Psychological Considerations
Must have the ability to deal with other people sometimes under stressful situations. Must be able to resolve differences and problems that arise with participants and work together with employees. Must be mature and able to use good judgement.
Physiological Considerations
Must have the ability to lift materials up to 50 pounds. Must be able to remain in a standing position for extended amounts of time and perform work at a moderate constant pace.
Environmental Considerations
Several activities are performed indoors; these conditions include lighting temperature and noise. Several activities are performed outdoors; these conditions include all weather conditions such as hot temperatures and sun exposure cold temperatures and precipitation.
Cognitive Considerations
Must have the ability to read write and speak English. Must be able to understand and follow instructions. Must be able to supervise others. Must possess good safety awareness and judgement. Must exhibit problem-solving ability and good judgement in keeping with the mission of the Park District.
