ABOUT THE POSITION AND THE HISTORY PROGRAM AT NORMANDALE

The members of the History Political Science and Education Departmentvalue a diversity of approaches and backgrounds in our faculty. Weare committed to providing a solid foundation in core historical areas to students of all believe in a rigorous quality education that provides learning opportunities on multiple curriculum offers a range of introductory and intermediate level courses that enhance the liberal arts preparation for students working toward the History Transfer Pathway AA degree another degree program at Normandale or transferring to four-year institutions whether or not they major in history. The Department encourages a participatory and democratic faculty culture and affirms the historically engaged roles our faculty have played in service to the college.

Normandale Community College is striving to achieve racial equity in educational outcomes. Those hired into these positions will be expected to advance this goal through culturally responsive teaching identifying barriers to success for students of color and proposing effective solutions to eliminate those barriers.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Teach a broad spectrum of history courses in face to face hybrid and online formats

  • Teach in an inclusive and equitable manner to a diverse student body

  • Provide quality instruction that incorporates a variety of current teaching techniques and pedagogies that positively impact the student and the discipline of history

  • Demonstrate knowledge of and experience in assessment of student learning outcomes

  • Participate in development and improvement of curricula and courses and in development and improvement of instructional methods materials and resources

  • Maintain ongoing professional development activities that support the college mission discipline and the students

  • Actively engage in college service department activities and student support

  • Maintain an active interest and knowledge of current practices that affect the discipline and field of study

Minimum Qualifications

  • Masters degree with a major in History or a Masters degree with a minimum of 18 graduate semester credits (27 graduate quarter credits) in History.

Teaching and Learning Competency Requirement

  • course construction (credit course)*

  • teaching/instructional methods (credit course)*

  • student outcomes assessment/evaluation (credit course)*

  • philosophy of community and technical college education (credit or non-credit course)**

  • Faculty shall have a degree in education or three years of successful full-time (or equivalent) teaching experience prior to being hired or shall be required to complete coursework in the above content areas (or their equivalent) prior to being granted unlimited status.

*These courses shall be waived for individuals who at the time of hire have: a degree in education or have documented evidence of successful completion of equivalent coursework in the specified teaching and learning content areas or have three years of successful full-time (or equivalent) secondary postsecondary industry or trade apprenticeship teaching experience in the field for which they are being hired. (Procedure 3.32.1 College Faculty Credentialing Part 5 Subpart B.2)
** This course shall be waived for individuals who at the time of hire have documented evidence of successful completion of equivalent coursework. (Procedure 3.32.1 College Faculty Credentialing Part 5 Subpart B.3)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience adapting teaching strategies and practices over time based on student performance and feedback as well as consideration of teaching and learning research

  • Experience designing engaging learning experiences in digital and in-person formats

  • Knowledge of Open Educational Resources (OER) affordances and limitations and how to successfully develop and/or implement them

  • Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds and with a broad range of interests and abilities

  • Knowledge of inclusive pedagogies including how to apply specific strategies for creating inclusive classrooms for students of historically underserved populations such as students of color Pell-eligible gender-diverse and first-generation students

  • Academic specializations that would contribute to teaching world history surveys such as Indigenous Studies African history Asian history Latin American history and Diasporic Studies.

  • Experience with digital humanities and/or public history pedagogies that complement existing faculty strengths such as historical GIS textual analysis minimal computing oral history projects museum studies and community-engaged practices
