Job Summary

Note: This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.

We are seeking a dedicated and hardworking Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research in the area of biostatistics and bioinformatics for microbiome science. You will actively participate in research to improve scientific understanding of the microbiome and host features that impact human health and resilience with a focus on military service member health. You will develop and implement methods tools and workflows for multi-omic data generation processing and analysis in the context of disease phenotypes. You will evaluate high-impact real-world datasets to develop insightful analyses into interactions between microbial features and host responses. This position is within the Microbiology/Immunology Group in the Biosciences and Biotechnology Division.

This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.

You will 

  • Apply statistical techniques to understand a range of microbiome-relevant health outcomes and disease states.
  • Develop and apply pipelines for metagenomic and metatranscriptomic data intake and processing.
  • Analyze multi-omic/phenotypic health-relevant datasets.
  • Research design and implement statistical and machine learning models that integrate pre-existing data with novel generated data to identify trends train models and predict outcomes.
  • Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad range of scientists internal and external to the Laboratory.
  • Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals.
  • Organize analyze and present data from research at seminars technical meetings and conferences.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications :

  • Must be eligible to access the Laboratory in compliance with Section 3112 of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).  See Additional Information section below for details. 
  • Ph.D. in Bioinformatics Biostatistics Computational Biology or a related field.
  • Fluency applying bioinformatics and statistical tools (R Python UNIX) in a high-performance computing environment.
  • Experience with metagenomic/metatranscriptomic data analysis and microbiome analytical tools including 16S rDNA whole metagenome sequence and long-read sequence data.
  • Ability to develop and apply novel analytical techniques for multi-omic analyses of microbiome data from health-relevant datasets.
  • Experience utilizing existing machine learning classification models and frameworks for biological applications.
  • Desire to learn and apply novel techniques adapting to complex project needs.
  • Ability to complete independent research projects as demonstrated through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills as well as a demonstrated ability to present technical information and effectively collaborate in a highly multidisciplinary team environment.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience developing/training machine learning frameworks for biological applications.
  • Experience with development and/or deployment of bioinformatics tools and databases.
  • Experience and/or training in applied mathematics.
