JOB DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of the Grounds Supervisor this position is responsible to direct and work with assigned personnel in the maintenance/grounds department. The Grounds Lead is a person skilled in the care and upkeep of lawns landscaped areas athletic fields playgrounds walkways ground surfaces outside structures sewage drainage systems and parking lots. This position will also provide direction to Grounds/Maintenance staff and other personnel as assigned.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  1. Must have High School Diploma or equivalent.
  2. Must provide transcripts of highest level of education within 30 days of employment.
  3. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
  4. Must be able to meet the Physical Demands of the position as indicated by taking and passing a physicalcapacity exam after job offer and before employment begins.
  5. Must pass a basic skills test.
  6. Completion of Safe Schools Web Based Training within 30 days and yearly thereafter.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  1. Minimum of five (5) years experience working in a grounds maintenance operation with multiple locations in a Lead capacity or acceptable equivalent as determined by the Kennewick School District.
  2. Washington State Pesticide Applicators License.
  3. Demonstrate the high degree of skill and knowledge expected of a journey level trades worker in the responsibilities listed under the headings Essential Duties and Responsibilities General Requirements Physical Demands and Work Environment.
  4. Possess and maintain a valid Washington State Drivers License with a clear driving record. (Applicant will be required to provide a current abstract of their driving record.)
  5. Willingness to comply with district board policies and established programs.
  6. Evidence of ability to operate computers and a Computerized Maintenance Management System. (CMMS)
  7. Evidence of ability to be a self-starter with a demonstrated ability to problem-solve.
  8. The ability to assess and correct issues involving safety; read and interpret plans construction drawings and blueprints.
  9. Ability to work flexible hours at times respond to emergencies willingness to work overtime.
  10. Show a history of dependability and punctuality along with positive evaluations and recommendations.
  11. Evidence of ability to organize and prioritize in order to meet the districts needs and deadlines.
  12. Evidence of ability to determine the scope of work and materials needed and make cost estimates for projects.
  13. Evidence of ability to establish and maintain a tactful cooperative and effective relationship with fellow employees shop lead persons district staff and administrators.
  14. Evidence of ability to approach assigned work in a professional manner working toward the common goal of teamwork pride in service delivery and continuous improvement.
  15. Demonstrated ability to operate power mowers weed-eaters blowers and chain saws.
  16. Demonstrated ability to service landscape equipment.
  17. Direct experience in operation repair and maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment used for grounds care.
  18. Knowledge and direct experiences in installation repair and maintenance of irrigation systems.
  19. Direct knowledge and experience of electronic irrigation controls.
  20. Knowledge of safe practices regulations procedures and requirements relating to grounds keeping.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Areas of responsibility include but are not limited to:

  1. Developed and underdeveloped turf surfaces including playfields football fields ornamental lawns and artificial turf.
  2. Prepared play surfaces and play structures.
  3. Parking areas roadways and walkways.
  4. Irrigation systems.
  5. Drainage systems; including drywells catch basins and storm drains
  6. Planting areas; including shrub beds and trees
  7. Outside structures including fence lines gates and pump-houses.
  8. Direct and perform work to build install modify and repair grounds facilities in a safe manner.
  9. Prepare labor and material cost estimates and material requirement lists collaboratively with Grounds Supervisor.
  10. Prioritize review and schedule the work of grounds crew to repair and maintain district grounds.
  11. Adjust shifts and crew to meet all the needs of changing weather conditions; i.e. after-hours snow check for removal prior to morning start of school summer break mow season etc.
  12. Responsible for training of permanent and temporary workers and recommend purchase of materials supplies and equipment.
  13. Verify the correct and timely ordering of materials supplies and equipment for grounds projects collaboratively with Director.
  14. Maintain the general appearance of exterior landscaping by directing the maintenance grounds employees including but not limited to the areas below;.
  15. Emptying trash cans and picking up exterior trash.
  16. Mowing and edging lawns and weeding flower beds.
  17. Trimming shrubs and trees at proper time of year and in recommended manner.
  18. Fertilization and irrigation of lawns and athletic fields.
  19. Mowing and prepping athletic fields for supporting events.
  20. Reporting graffiti on exterior surfaces.
  21. Sweeping/blowing District parking lots steps and walkways.
  22. Practice proper safety procedures when operating power equipment around schools.
  23. Adhering to District/Department Policies and Procedures.
  24. Remove snow sand drives and parking lots as needed.
  25. Assist Director with the oversight and management of the District spray program ensuring that licensed and unlicensed sprayers are following W.S.D.A. reporting and posting requirements while keeping required documentation for auditing and compliance purposes.
  26. Complete/Assign work requests in the School Dude work request system as required.
  27. Attend Lead meetings with other Facilities Department Leads Coordinators and Managers.
  28. Provide input and expertise and assist with the oversight of Contractors Vendors Architects and Engineers as required or assigned by the Grounds Supervisor.
  29. Assist in identifying and evaluating needs for grounds maintenance work and inclusion into the Districts Asset Preservation Program.
  30. Assist in determining the cause of failures discovered during preventative maintenance inspections and offer suggestions for correction.
  31. Provide input when requested concerning budgetary needs for materials supplies and equipment.
  32. Maintain up-to-date knowledge and expertise.
  33. Assist in determining training needs to maintain the skills of assigned personnel.
  34. Provide input to the Director in evaluating group or individual performance.
  35. Maintain assigned tools and equipment.
  36. Respond at any time to emergencies.
  37. Model appropriate and cooperative behavior including protecting confidential information consistent with district guidelines.
  38. Foster and maintain strong productive relationships with district employees parents students and other community members.
  39. Perform other duties and assume other related duties as assigned by the Grounds Supervisor.
