SUMMARY

This position is responsible to carry out daily tasks for the Department of Transportation Engineering and Operations Division. This role requires a strong background in electrical and electronic troubleshooting particularly in traffic signal systems and communication networks that use copper and/or fiber optic cables.

The primary responsibilities include installing maintaining and repairing traffic managing servicing a network of traffic management and detection cameras diagnosing and troubleshooting issues at signalized intersections conducting on-site repairs in the field performing advanced component-level repairs and maintenance on traffic signal equipment.

Major Duties & Responsibilities:

1. Performs advanced component-level repair and maintenance of traffic signal controllers and other transportation-related equipment. Programs the equipment for specialized applications or assigns work to journeyman-level technicians and serves as field supervisor in the maintenance installation and repair of traffic signal controllers and related equipment.

2. Designs and develops special circuits and devices to respond to special traffic control needs.

3. Troubleshoots analyzes and repairs traffic control and traffic surveillance equipment.

4. Works in a bi-monthly 24-hour-a-day on-call rotation schedule.

5. Makes decisions regarding design new construction or repair work on traffic signals and other related electronic equipment.

6. Performs maintenance and calibration on the traffic signal computer system and on related cable and peripheral equipment.

7. Performs related work as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent

  • Three (3) years of demonstrated experience in electronics and electrical repair work.

  • Valid Driver License and ability to obtain a city driving permit

  • Ability to participate in a bi-monthly 24-hour-a-day on-call rotation schedule

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two-year college degree in electronics

  • AutoCAD experience

  • A Level I and Level II IMSA Traffic Signal Certification

Knowledge Skills & Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of the principles of electronic and digital circuit theory

  • Considerable knowledge of the methods and practices of the repair of real time components as required by the nature of the assignment

  • Advanced skill in the design installation repair and maintenance of a variety of types of electronic equipment and other related electrical equipment

  • Ability to prepare and maintain work records and routine reports

  • Ability to read and interpret complex schematic diagrams and specifications for traffic signal controllers and related equipment

  • Ability to supervise design and review the work of subordinates.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
