The Fleet Management Division is actively seeking a Fleet Services Driver.

This is service maintenance work in operating a tanker or truck to deliver fuel or hazardous materials to various sites operating a wrecker to transport equipment and tow vehicles and operating related vehicles. The work requires knowledge of techniques methods and procedures used to transport fuel vehicles and equipment which is acquired through a combination of training and considerable on the job experience . Contacts require courtesy tact and effectiveness in dealing with others and includes contacts to request or provide information ask questions or obtain clarifications. The work is semi-routine in that tasks are covered by established procedures and precedents but some latitude is permitted to consider the most appropriate course of action. The work is patterned involving similar situations and generally requires only the choice of the correct procedure. The work is performed in a controlled environment where there are some risks and hazards but they are known predictable and controllable. Physical demands are moderate and primarily consist of standing stooping bending reaching climbing walking at work sites for extended periods of time and lifting and moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Operates motor vehicles and uses equipment and tools necessary for transporting fuel vehicles and equipment. Work is performed under general supervision where the work assignments are varied and although subject to instructions and established work routines the worker is permitted some latitude to set priorities subject to supervisors approval.

Examples of Work

  • Operates a tractor truck and fuel tanker or fuel truck to transport fuel or hazardous materials to various sites.
  • Operates a wrecker to transport equipment and tows vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10000 pounds or more such as dump trucks stake body trucks and garbage packers.
  • Operates transporting vehicles such as lowboys to move equipment from one location to another.
  • Inspects the condition of the vehicles and reports needed repairs and servicing.
  • Performs preventive maintenance such as changing windshield wipers oil and tires and replenishing transmission and hydraulic fluids.
  • Replenishes gasoline diesel and LP to fuel tankers and fuel trucks at fueling terminals.
  • Transfers gasoline and fuel from below ground fuel tanks to fuel trucks.
  • Mitigates fuel leaks in compliance with federal state and local laws rules regulations and procedures.
  • Adjusts and operates pumps lifts and other auxiliary equipment.
  • Maintains records and prepares reports.
  • Provides training or technical assistance to other workers.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonvilles competencies.
  • Performs related work as required.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of techniques methods and procedures used to transport fuel vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of standard tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the hazards of the work and safety practices and procedures.
  • Ability to inspect and determine mechanical repairs needed on vehicles with gas and diesel engines.
  • Ability to perform preventive maintenance on trucks and tankers.
  • Ability to read understand and apply repair orders and technical manuals.
  • Ability to operate tools and equipment.
  • Ability to operate trucks tankers and other vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10000 pounds or more.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records.

Open Requirements/Supplemental Information

  • Two years of education and/or experience in the operating of tandem axle tractor trucks with tankers or trailers or related vehicles used in transporting bulk material.
LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:
  • A valid Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with X Endorsement is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this class.
  • Must qualify for prior to appointment obtain and maintain during employment in this class a City of Jacksonville Certification as a Public Driver.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • The probationary period for this class is six months.
  • Upon appointment to this class must possess minimum hand tools as required.
  • This classification performs safety-sensitive functions and is subject to pre-employment random and other drug/alcohol testing programs as set forth in the City of Jacksonvilles Drug Free Workplace Policy (0401).
