Job Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Director of Dentistry
- Employee will be dually supervised by the dentist at their assigned institution.
- Employee will assist with providing dental care to patients in their assigned clinic and statewide as needed.
- Prepares patients for treatment and provides chairside assistance for all dental procedures.
- Operates dental equipment as necessary for the care and treatment of patients.
- Exposes develops and mounts/files dental x-rays.
- Also prepares and maintains dental x-ray developing solutions.
- Maintains dental equipment by cleaning and lubricating dental hand pieces suction lines etc.
- Also cleans working areas and sterilizes instruments and equipment.
- Prepares and mixes various filling and impression materials.
- Performs clinical laboratory procedures.
- Performs prophylaxis and oral hygiene instruction as needed.
- Schedules dental appointments.
- Maintains dental patient records.
- Maintains the inventory of the clinics dental supplies.
- Request additional supplies as needed.
- Keeps statistical reports on clinical activities and performs administrative/clerical duties as necessary.
- Assists with providing dental care to other dental clinics statewide as instructed/needed.

Minimum and Additional Requirements
State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:An associate degree in Dental Assistance or one year of formal training in a dental assistance course accredited by the American Dental Association.
SCDC Minimum Requirements:(Or an acceptable equivalence as approved by the Division of State Human Resources).
Associate degree in dental assistance or a high school diploma and one (1) year of formal training in an ADA accredited assistants course and one (1) year of dental assistant experience with certification in dental x-ray.
