Postdoctoral Fellow Quantitative Infectious Disease Research at Emory University Rollins School of Public Health

Emory University is a leading research university in Atlanta Georgia with world-class programs in public health and infectious disease research.

The fellow will be based in the Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics and affiliated with the Emory Center for Infectious Disease Modeling & Analytics Training Hub (Emory CIDMATH). Emory CIDMATH is part of the CDCs Center for Forecasting and Outbreak Analytics Insight Network. The fellow will work closely with Dr. Natalie Dean and collaborators across Emory and the CDC on projects spanning respiratory viruses arboviruses HIV diarrheal diseases and emerging pathogens.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow with strong quantitative skills and experience in infectious disease epidemiological studies. The successful candidate will:
  • Conduct analyses of national influenza and COVID-19 surveillance data developing and applying improved statistical methods for vaccine effectiveness studies.
  • Lead analytical projects with partners across Emorys infectious disease network including the Georgia Emerging Infections Program and the Emory Center for AIDS Research.
  • Lead and co-author manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals as well as high-level editorials where appropriate.
  • Present findings in internal seminars and external conferences.
  • Mentor PhD and MPH students working on related projects.
  • Contribute to grant applications and related products that support both the broader research program and the fellows emerging independent agenda.

The position also offers professional development opportunities through summer short courses a journal club multiple seminar series and the CDC Insight Network.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED:

  • PhD (or equivalent) in Biostatistics Epidemiology or a closely related field.
  • Strong applied data analysis and quantitative modeling skills.
  • Demonstrated excellence in scientific writing and oral communication (e.g. first-authored manuscripts dissertation work).
  • Ability to work effectively and collegially in a collaborative multidisciplinary environment.

PREFERRED:

  • Research experience in infectious disease epidemiology and/or vaccine effectiveness studies.
  • Experience developing or implementing simulation studies.
  • Demonstrated interest and experience in mentoring students.
  • Organized self-motivated and able to balance independent work with team-based projects.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Helps design and conduct research within a specified field while receiving advanced training from a designated Principal Investigator to enhance professional skills and research independence needed for pursuit of a career.
  • The specific area of research in which the trainee is mentored is determined by the department and laboratory of the Postdoc.
  • Designs and evaluates experiments.
  • Develops new ideas that promote current research.
  • Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigator.
  • May be responsible for operation of specific equipment.
  • May teach techniques to others train and supervise research staff.
  • Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee.
  • The initial appointment is for one year renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available.
  • Appointments cannot exceed five years.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D. M.D. ScD. D.V.M. DDS etc) in an appropriate field.
  • Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills.
  • The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues.
  • Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.

NOTE: This role will be granted the opportunity to work from home regularly but must be able to commute to Emory University on a flexible weekly schedule based upon business needs. Schedule is based on agreed upon guidelines of department. This role requires residency in the state of GA. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
