Job Summary and Purpose
The Athletic Trainer develops and implements an athletic training program and a sports medicine instructional program that will effectively meet the needs of all students. The Athletic Trainer evaluates and treats sport related injuries as well as student performance in the classroom. The certified athletic trainer (ATC) is a highly educated and skilled professional specializing in athletic health cooperation with physicians allied health professionals and administrative personnel the ATC functions as an integral member of the athletic health care team in the high school.
Work Objectives/Essential Functions
- Prevention of athletic injuries.
- Early recognition evaluation and care of athletic injuries.
- Assessment of the type of injury rehabilitation and reconditioning of athletic injuries to minimize the risk of re-injuring.
- The referral of injured athletes to appropriate medical professionals when necessary.
- Health care administration including medical record keeping documentation and reporting.
- Establishing policies and procedures related to athletic training.
- Oversee the budget and inventory of the athletic training program.
- Education and training of coaches parents and student athletes.
- Supervision and training of student assistants.
- Supervision of athletic practices and athletic home events.
- Complete required reports promptly and accurately.
- Accept responsibilities outside the classroom as they relate to the school.
- Assume responsibility for care of materials equipment and facilities.
- Assume responsibility for a neat safe environment for students committed to the teachers care.
- Practice and promote positive interaction with and among students.
- Demonstrate enthusiasm for learning.
- Demonstrate interest in students and athletes.
- Encourage self-direction and self-motivation in students and athletes.
- Adapt and adjust instructional presentation of subject content to students needs and interests.
- Maintain and organized program of instruction based on effective long-range plans.
- Exhibit evidence of effective lesson planning.
- Utilize a variety of appropriate materials and resources.
- Communicate the lesson objective and its importance to students.
- Utilize appropriate and varied teaching techniques and leaning activities both in class and out of class.
- Maintain an effective system of monitoring student progress and to inform appropriate persons of such progress.

Required Licensures and Certifications
- Hold or be eligible for a valid teaching license which meets Commonwealth of Virginia requirements with specific endorsement in the area to which assigned.
Formal Certifications Relevant to the Job
- Must hold current CPR/First Aid certification.
- Hold National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification (NATABOC).
Additional Skill Requirements
- Knowledge of Athletic Trainer and Sports Medicine curriculum
- Classroom management strategies
- Ability to assess individual needs and performance
- Practice appropriate protocols in the field of athletic training
