The primary purpose of this position is to conduct forensic examinations of computer systems and analyzes electronic evidence using acceptable forensic methods for the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) allied law enforcement agencies and the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force. Cases referred for examination involve the sexual exploitation of children fraud forgery theft homicide and drug violations to name a few. This position involves critical duties and responsibilities that must continue to be performed during crisis situations and contingency operations which may require extended hours of work.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct computer forensic examinations and services in accordance with industry best practices or the policy procedures and practices of the South Dakota DCI including preservation acquisition validation and analysis of digital data contained in computer hardware and software including but not limited to desktop computers laptop computers hard drives removable media cell phones mobile devices network servers and devices and any other digital devices.
  • Participate in the capacity of a Computer Forensic Examiner in the search for and acquisition of digital media at offsite locations and crime scenes.
  • Maintain care custody and control of evidence.
  • Produce competent written technical and non-technical reports.
  • Testify in local state and federal courts as an expert witness and be familiar with legal terminology and court procedures.
  • Conduct testing and research to stay up to date with the latest digital forensic technologies and methods.
  • Participate in continuing education including formal and informal training to maintain demonstrated competency and certifications.
  • Work under time constraints and produce quality work product under a heavy workload while maintaining organization of projects and assignments.
  • Perform peer review of technically complex cases.
  • Implement and troubleshoot hardware and software in a laboratory and network environment.
  • Comply with directives from law enforcement personnel.
  • Prepare and submit various performance standards statistics and metrics for the DCI and the SD ICAC Task Force.
  • Assisting with in-service training to law enforcement agencies and States and United States Attorneys.
  • Assisting with public education programs.
  • Other duties as assigned by the unit supervisor and/or ICAC Commander.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • The ability to work extremely well under pressure while maintaining a professional image and approach with citizens coworkers outside agencies etc. is critical.
  • Ability to use basic computer applications such as is included in Microsoft Office Tools etc. Must have the ability to compile and maintain statistical data within Excel and/or related programs.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to clearly articulate computer and information technology concepts to a non-technical audience.
  • Strong analytical and investigative skills to identify patterns and draw conclusions based on evidence and find connections between data sources.
  • Physical strength and stamina sufficient to perform the duties of this position.


Licenses and Certifications:
This position requires a completed bachelors degree or an equivalent combination of related education and lieu of a completed bachelors degree law enforcement experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis. Applicants not meeting the following requirements will be disqualified from competing for this position:

  • Applicants must be a United States citizen;
  • Applicants must be at least 21 years of age at time of appointment;
  • Applicants must possess or have the ability to obtain a South Dakota drivers license.

Working conditions include but are not limited to; statewide travel and occasionally working in outside weather conditions. Must be willing to function in an undercover capacity and conduct surveillance activity which may require work outside normal working hours.
