The Manufacturing Engineering Lead is responsible for developing and maintaining efficient safe and reliable processes within the Chemical (Chem) Shop. This role ensures that all methods workflows and documentation support safety quality and on-time delivery. The position focuses on turning technical knowledge into clear visual standards that promote consistency reduce rework and improve overall operational performance.
2.0 Primary Functions
2.1 Safety Achieve zero chemical-exposure recordables. Ensure interlocks PPE and SOPs are implemented maintained and audited.
2.2 Quality Maintain 98% First Pass Yield (FPY) through strip/rinse/dry operations; reduce Chem-related MRB occurrences by 50%; ensure all gauges and test kits follow a defined calibration schedule.
2.3 Delivery Reduce lead time through the Chem area by 30% by establishing FIFO lanes WIP limits and clear changeover standards.
2.4 Stability Maintain bath control through simple SPC checks; eliminate unplanned dumps; ensure routers and process times in ERP reflect actual conditions.
2.5 Clarity Ensure each active part family has a current router with defined entry/exit criteria and verification points.
3.0 Additional Duties
3.1 Design and maintain standardized methods for strip rinse neutralize and dry processes including visual checks at each step.
3.2 Collaborate with the Chemical Engineer to define and maintain simple acceptance criteria (pH time temperature concentration cleanliness dryness) that are practical and easy to verify.
3.3 Engineer and maintain safety controls (interlocks ventilation LOTO point-of-use PPE) and ensure SOPs are concise photo-based and consistently followed.
3.4 Improve process flow using FIFO lanes WIP limits and optimized fixtures/racks to improve handling efficiency and reduce rework.
3.5 Maintain accurate routers process times and checkpoints in ERP to align promise dates with actual capacity.
3.6 Lead root cause investigations to closure using 8D methodology; implement corrective actions and integrate them into process standards and poka-yoke systems.
3.7 Coordinate wastewater treatment processes with EHS and the Chemical Engineer ensuring proper segregation labeling and recordkeeping.
3.8 Develop operator capability through training certification and refreshers; maintain an effective tier-1 board for daily communication and performance tracking.
4.0 Knowledge Skills Abilities
4.1 Have 815 years of experience in manufacturing preferably within lean regulated or special process environments (e.g. precision machining assembly or testing). A chemistry background is beneficial but not required.
4.2 Proven ability to convert tribal knowledge into clear visual standards; strong experience with ISO systems audits and cross-functional collaboration.
4.3 Proficiency in managing SPC for critical parameters calibration programs and 8D/MRB processes through closure.
4.4 Hands-on shop-floor presence with effective communication skills; partners effectively with technical experts and engineers.
5.0 Physical Requirements
5.1 Ability to bend twist climb stoop or stand for extended periods.
5.2 Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
5.3 Ability to sit or stand at a workstation for long durations.
5.4 Strong attention to detail and ability to follow detailed written and verbal instructions.
5.5 This position requires regular on-site presence during normal business hours as consistent attendance is an essential function of the role.
