We have an exciting opportunity in our Montreal news bureau we are hiring a permanent national reporter to cover Montreal and Quebec news for a Canadian audience.

We are looking for a candidate who is passionate about daily news and able to deliver on our CBC News mission of being with the audience every day making sense of the world together. Live when they need us and on demand when they want us.

The reporter must understand the nuances of Montreal and Quebec news and be able to tell these stories to a national audience. A wide range of storytelling skills and journalistic range are essential for this role. This reporter will need to file packaged video audio and text stories and be comfortable going live in all these mediums.

Our Montreal team constantly juggles breaking news daily files and works away at original stories. We need someone who enthusiastically pitches ideas every day is motivated to drive stories forward and works well with a team. Coordinating and collaborating with the local Montreal newsroom on a daily basis will be essential.

This posting is for a National Reporter STTRC pay band 36 position. Candidates should be bilingual in French and English and have at least seven (7) years of directly-relevant experience. Candidates can expect to work overtime and could be deployed outside of Montreal to cover stories. The role will involve working Wednesday to Sunday in the Montreal office.

Please include 2 video news stories 2 radio news stories 2 text news stories and 2 examples of live work (eg. Live hit on NN or Fast live contributions for a Live Page live hit into a radio program).

Responsibilities:

  • Recognize newsworthy issues and breaking news events and take immediate and effective action to ensure appropriate coverage.

  • Have strong knowledge of Montreal and Quebec news politics and culture. Cultivate a wide and diverse range of sources for story ideas.

  • Pitch stories with a focus on Montreal and Quebec on a daily basis. Pitches should be relevant to an audience that both lives inside the province and in other parts of Canada. Pitches should aim at growing new audiences according to our mandate.

  • Jump on breaking news and file into live story pages and live programming including News Network radio news and social media platforms. Do not hesitate to go out on location whenever possible.

  • Research write and craft packaged audio video and text stories on deadline.

  • Work collaboratively with editors and vettors to sharpen writing headlines and text.

  • Deploy to other regions of Quebec and Canada as needed.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent.

  • Minimum seven (7) years in journalism or equivalent.

Skills:

  • Strong journalistic skills and knowledge of Montreal and Quebec issues.

  • Experience writing researching fact-checking and packaging text audio and video pieces.

  • Excellent performance writing and live skills.

  • Strong editorial judgment and creative production sense.

  • Knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to journalism and firm grasp of Journalism Standards and Practices.

  • Cultural awareness and sensitivity.

  • Open mindset.

  • Excellent news judgment and ability to work effectively under 24/7 deadline pressures.

  • Proven ability to set priorities plan organize and meet deadlines under challenging circumstances.

  • Proven ability to file same-day stories.

  • Stellar communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Familiarity with the programs Avid 9 CMS and Dalet would be an asset.

  • Knowledge of style is an asset
