Job Summary

In collaboration with physicians manage care delivery for critical care and surgical patients and coordinate services provided by multiple disciplines within and outside the health system. Exercise independent judgment in the assessment diagnosis and initiation of selected protocols/procedures. Provide educational support for patients/guardians health team members and the community. Also coordinate QA/QI studies to measure outcomes of care.

The Gerber Foundation Neonatal Center is a Level IV neonatal intensive care unit is the only hospital in West Michigan to offer this level of care. We also have the largest neonatal unit in the state of Michigan and are one of the nations top 10 largest contiguous neonatal centers.

As a Level 4 unit we are different from other units in that we are located within an institution with the capability to provide surgical repair of complex congenital or acquired addition we educate nursing and medical students along with medical residents. We can transport ill infants from outside hospitals. We also provide ongoing education as well as newborn nursery coverage for hospitals in our region in Michigan.

We are also one of the few neonatal centers in the country to have a designated space within the NICU for extremely premature babies. The small baby unit is designed specifically to meet the medically complex needs of these babies born at or before 27 weeks. All the staff working in this area have received extensive training in the complex care of these very fragile babies.

Essential Functions

  • Functions in the role of advanced practitioner to coordinate comprehensive care delivery. Utilizes critical thinking and expert clinical skills to assess plan intervene and evaluate the care delivered to critically ill patients. Collaborates closely with physician colleagues and other health care team members. Writes orders/prescriptions for standard formulary medications laboratory radiographic studies and consultations coordinating the scheduling of admissions diagnostic evaluations follow-up exams laboratory tests referrals to home care social services and other community agencies order to ensure continuity of care and coordination of services.

  • Obtains histories and performs physical exams.

  • Assesses the patients guardians health care teams schools and other community educational needs and develops implements evaluates and revises teaching strategies/educational programs related to area of specialty.

  • Acts as a patient advocate crossing multidisciplinary lines to meet patient needs.

  • Communicates collaborates networks with and acts as a consultant to other members of the health care team within and outside Spectrum Health. Acts as a consult in area of expertise.

  • Performs and assists with designated procedures including resuscitation and responding to other medical emergencies.

  • Documents in the medical record and dictates information as appropriate.

  • Provides input into the strategic planning implementation and evaluation of service/program. Measures the outcomes of care and evaluate services across the continuum of inpatient to outpatient services. Makes recommendations to improve the quality of patient care provided and utilizes the scientific method to research clinical problems.

Qualifications

  • Required Masters Degree or equivalent Nurse Practitioners who obtained their education and certification after 2000 must show evidence of completion of a masters post-masters or doctorate from a Nurse Practitioner program that is accredited by the Commission on the Collegiate of Nursing Education or the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission

  • 5 years of relevant experience current relevant clinical experience including three years in area of specialty Required

  • Previous experience functioning in a collaborative role. Ability to coordinate care provided by multiple services. Required

  • Experience as a Nurse Practitionerin critical care area Preferred

  • LIC-Registered Nurse (RN) - STATEMI State of Michigan Upon Hire required

  • LIC-Nurse Practitioner (NP) - STATEMI State of Michigan Upon Hire required Or

  • LIC-Physician Assistant - STATEMI State of Michigan Upon Hire required

  • CRT-Basic Life Support (BLS) - AHA American Heart Association Upon Hire required Or

  • CRT-Basic Life Support (BLS) - ARC American Red Cross Upon Hire required

  • CRT-Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) - AHA American Heart Association Upon Hire required
