You will lead the Ferries Unit in the Ferries Directorate in Transport Scotland. The Ferry Directorate is responsible for all aspects of ferry services port infrastructure and legislation delivered on behalf of Scottish Ministers. This Unit is one of 2 C3 led teams in the Directorate and focuses on the management of two major lifeline ferry contracts (the Clyde and Hebrides and Northern Isles services) setting Ferries Policy and delivering new vessels and port infrastructure - in partnership with ferry operators and Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL).
This is a fantastic opportunity to develop your skills in delivering a challenging high profile and rewarding role. The successful candidate will work as part of a collegiate senior management team at Transport Scotland and will be supported by 2 excellent teams which are led by 2X C2 team leaders and 6X C1 Leads.
Working with Ministers to develop a strategic policy in relation to all aspects of ferry services through the Islands Connectivity Plan and future asset investment through the Ports and Vessels Plan
Overseeing CMAL to deliver a 700 million programme of capital investment in vessels and shoreside infrastructure
Providing input into the procurement of the new contract for the Northern Isles Ferry services contract
Managing contracts worth approx. 300m per annum for the provision of ferry services on the Clyde and Hebrides and Northern Isles ferry networks including developing arrangements to manage the newly directly awarded contract to Calmac.
Driving operational policy issues for ferries and ports including timetabling fares and interaction with local authority run ferry services.
Working closely with a range of stakeholders including community groups public sector and commercial partners. Develop strong relationships with senior management of David MacBrayne Limited (Calmac) Northlink Ferries and Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited.
Contributing to corporate and business plans other cross directorate programme and assurance boards and robust financial monitoring and planning.
Drive value for money in the delivery of ferry services through a review of current funding mechanisms and development of alternative approaches; and working with operators to drive efficiencies within existing operations and through future investment.
Work with external and internal stakeholders on issues related to vessel procurement and the delivery of new tonnage.
Develop and support strategies for community engagement including with the Ferry Community Board.
Supporting Transport Scotlands response to major planned and unplanned events.

Transport Scotlands main office is based in Glasgow and the post will be based flexibly between Victoria Quay and 177 Bothwell St Glasgow. Although as with most areas across the organisation hybrid working is the current arrangement there is an expectation that Transport Scotland staff work out of the home at least two days per week. Given the geographic coverage of this role travel across the network is to be expected.
