DescriptionIn accordance with the Vision Purpose and Values and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health) patient and staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.
Under the general supervision of the Manager the Recreation Therapist works as a member of the inter-professional team providing therapeutic intervention within the context of a client-centered approach the vision/values of VIHA and in accordance with BC Therapeutic Recreation Association (BCTRA) Standards of Practice. Assesses plans delivers leads and evaluates recreation interventions for individual and group treatment programs emphasizing independence and health promotion. Works closely with clients families caregivers and liaises with community programs and organizations in the planning and implementation of recreational activities and programs. The Recreation Therapist functions autonomously while recognizing the importance of using an inter-professional collaborative approach to achieve excellence in health services and education.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education Training And Experience
- Bachelors degree in Therapeutic Recreation.
- Eligible for registration with the British Columbia Therapeutic Recreation Association.
- Comprehensive knowledge Mental Health and Substance Use rehabilitation practices.
- Relevant clinical experience.
- Valid BC drivers license.
Skills And Abilities
- Ability to work independently plan and organize workload maintain flexibility and establish priorities.
- Ability to select administer implement score analyze and interpret standardized and non-standardized assessments.
- Ability to select goal-directed and outcome-oriented interventions aimed at maintenance and/or enhancement of individual leisure status and functional level.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with others including clients families support workers volunteers referring professionals recreation centres and other agencies.
- Ability to work effectively as part of an inter-professional team.
- Demonstrated oral and written communication skills including interviewing interpersonal and leadership skills problem-solving ability and conflict resolution skills.
- Physical ability to perform the duties of this position.
- Computer literacy with software programs such as Word Processing and Microsoft Outlook.
- Knowledge of the principles of adult education and demonstrated ability to teach and empower clients.
- Ability to practice sound professional judgment empathy tact and integrity.
