Function/Duties of Position

The Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) is seeking a Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist for full time faculty positions in our outpatient clinic. This position includes staffing our Bridge Clinic Services as described below.

This is a 1.0 FTE Assistant to Associate Professor appointment (12-month fixed-term) with responsibilities in the outpatient child psychiatry clinic. This is a full-time clinical position with an expectation of 80% clinical presence (outpatient settings) and 20% to dedicated supervision teaching and other academic responsibilities. In this role you will provide compassionate evidence-based psychiatric care to children and adolescents collaborate within an interdisciplinary team and contribute to OHSUs missions of clinical excellence education and scholarly inquiry. Research and other scholarly activities are encouraged but not required with protected time allotted for academic pursuits.

As a member of an academic medical center the incumbent will engage in teaching and supervision of trainees and participate in departmental academic activities. The position offers a dynamic collaborative environment with opportunities to work closely with pediatricians psychologists social workers nurses and other professionals to provide holistic care. OHSU is Oregons only academic health center dedicated to improving the health and quality of life for all Oregonians through excellence in health care education and research. We are looking for a creative team-oriented psychiatrist who is committed to outstanding patient care teaching and fostering an inclusive environment in line with OHSUs values.

The duties of this position include:

  • Outpatient General Clinical Psychiatry (70%): Provide outpatient evaluation diagnosis and treatment for children and adolescents with a variety of mental health conditions. Conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments formulate treatment plans and provide ongoing medication management and psychotherapy interventions (as appropriate) for youth and families in the clinic. Collaborate with primary care providers therapists and school personnel as needed to coordinate care. Maintain timely and thorough documentation in the electronic health record. Supervise psychiatry residents in the outpatient clinic 0.5 days per week overseeing their clinical care and providing teaching and mentorship during their rotation.
  • 30% Bridge Clinic Services. OHSU Bridge clinic services support youth in need of short-term psychiatric care. This clinic primarily serves youth with a recent crisis leading to ED care or hospitalization and youth who are at risk of these services in our ambulatory clinics in pediatrics. The service is a short-term bridge to long term care at OHSU or in the community.
  • Teaching and Supervision: Dedicate a portion of time to educational and supervisory activities. This includes direct supervision of child psychiatry fellows general psychiatry residents medical students and other trainees on both the CL service and in the outpatient clinic. Facilitate a supportive learning environment by teaching clinical skills reviewing cases and providing constructive feedback. Participate in didactic teaching such as presenting lectures or seminars in the Department of Psychiatry or for interdisciplinary audiences. Serve as a role model in professionalism compassionate care and evidence-based practice for learners.
  • Scholarly and Academic Activities: Utilize academic time for scholarly pursuits. This time may be used for research projects quality improvement initiatives curriculum development or other academic interests aligned with the faculty members career goals. While research is encouraged but not required the department supports scholarly activity that can contribute to academic advancement and the promotion of the faculty member. Faculty are encouraged to publish work present at conferences or develop innovative clinical programs as part of their academic contribution.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with colleagues across disciplines to enhance patient care and outcomes. The CL Service inherently involves collaboration with pediatric specialists (such as pediatricians neurologists surgeons) as well as regular interaction with psychologists social workers nursing staff and therapists. In the outpatient setting coordinate with therapists primary care physicians and community resources. Contribute to multidisciplinary team meetings and case discussions ensuring a holistic approach to each patients care. Foster strong working relationships that embody OHSUs spirit of interprofessional cooperation and teamwork.
  • Clinical Administration and Other Duties: Participate in program development and clinical administration as needed. This may include attending faculty meetings contributing to service line development for the pediatric CL program or outpatient clinic workflows and engaging in quality improvement or clinical research initiatives in the division. Ensure compliance with hospital and clinic policies quality and safety standards and contribute to continuous improvement efforts within the Department of Psychiatry.
  • On-Call and Weekends: Participate in the divisions on-call rotation for child psychiatry services. This includes covering approximately 4 weekend call shifts per year on the CL service (with additional compensation for these weekends). Weekend duties involve being available for inpatient consultations and urgent clinical issues that arise on the pediatric units. Share holiday call coverage on a rotating basis with colleagues as applicable. No routine night call is required outside of these scheduled weekends as night coverage is typically taken by on-call faculty in a rotating system (details to be clarified by the division). The expectation of periodic weekend service is designed to ensure continuous patient care while being spread equitably among faculty members.

Required Qualifications

  • Education & Training: M.D. or D.O. degree from an accredited medical school. Completion of an accredited residency in General Psychiatry and an accredited fellowship in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry is required.
  • Board Certification/Eligibility: Board certified or board eligible in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (must be board certified within a specified time frame per OHSU guidelines if not already certified). Board certification in General Psychiatry is also expected. Eligible for medical licensure in the state of Oregon and compliance with all credentialing requirements for clinical practice at OHSU.
  • Clinical Expertise: Demonstrated excellence in clinical care of children adolescents and families. Competence in a broad range of child & adolescent psychiatric disorders and treatments including psychiatric evaluation psychopharmacology and psychosocial interventions. Ability to consult on complex medical/psychiatric cases in a hospital setting and to manage a regular panel of outpatients effectively. Experience or training in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry (especially in pediatric settings) is highly valued. A commitment to trauma-informed and developmentally appropriate care is essential.
  • Teaching & Supervision: Passion for teaching and mentoring the next generation of clinicians. Prior experience teaching or supervising medical students residents or fellows (for example during residency/fellowship training) is desirable. Ability to provide constructive feedback and to foster a positive learning environment for trainees. An academic mindset and willingness to contribute to the educational mission are expected.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary team and collaborate with professionals from other fields (pediatrics nursing psychology social work etc.). A strong commitment to team-based care and collegiality is required. The ideal candidate will be flexible collegial and adept at building collaborative relationships in a complex healthcare setting.
  • Scholarly Interests: While not required interest in academic pursuits such as clinical research scholarly writing or innovative program development is a plus. Motivation to utilize the provided academic time to contribute to the field (through research projects quality improvement or education) will be supported. The department offers mentorship and resources for professional development and scholarly growth.
  • Licensure/Certification: Valid medical license (or eligibility for licensure) in Oregon. DEA certification for prescribing. Maintenance of board certification and licensure through continuing medical education (CME) and professional development activities. Credentialing through OHSU and affiliated hospitals will be required prior to starting.

Additional Details

Academic Environment: This position is within OHSUs School of Medicine a thriving academic medical center environment. The faculty member will join a collaborative team in the Division of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry which includes child psychiatrists psychologists nurse practitioners social workers and trainees. OHSU provides a rich setting for academic medicine where patient care teaching and research are closely integrated. Faculty have access to state-of-the-art facilities and a wide network of colleagues in pediatrics and other specialties. There are regular opportunities for continuing medical education Grand Rounds case conferences and participation in scholarly collaborations. The incumbent will have protected time to pursue academic interests and while research is not a requirement the department encourages scholarly engagement and will support efforts to develop academic projects or research that align with the facultys interests.
