JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision to install and repair chain link fences and gates; and to perform related duties as required.

Examples of Duties

Erect and repair metal fences and fence gates at District sites using hand and power tools; lay out fence line using tape measure and mark position for postholes; dig postholes with posthole digger. E

Set metal post in upright position in posthole. E

Mix concrete by hand or in cement mixer; pour concrete around base of post; align posts using line or by sighting along edges of posts. E

Make safety inspections of chain link fences and gates. E

Remove replace or repair damaged chain link fences. E

Cut metal tubing using pipe cutter. E

Assemble gates and fasten into position using hand tools. E

Repair wrought iron fences with handtools or by welding. E

Prefabricate and weld new gates in shop and transport to site for installation; prefabricate crawl covers and window guards. E

Requisition and receive materials. E

Estimate time and materials for a job. E

Write reports on work performed as needed. E

Operate materials handling equipment. E

Drive a District vehicle. E

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
A Fence Erector performs skilled installation and repair work primarily on chain link fences at District sites. An incumbent lays out fence pours concrete for the fence posts and welds new and damaged fence and fence gates and may direct the work of others on jobs requiring assistance.

Employment Standards

Knowledge of:
Safety practices and procedures including Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
Gas and electric welding brazing and cutting.
Materials and supplies used in fence and gate installation and repair.
Shop math applicable to fence and gate prefabrication and installation.
Safe heavy equipment rigging and moving.

Ability to:
Construct install and repair chain link fence and gates.
Lay out post holes from plans and drawings.
Operate gas and electric welding equipment to weld fence and gate parts and devices.
Operate hand and power tools used in fence installation and repair.
Understand and work from blueprints drawings and sketches.
Estimate time and materials to complete an assignment.
Operate heavy and materials handling equipment.
Follow oral and written instructions.
Direct the work of subordinates assigned to a project.
Operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Training:
Equivalent to graduation from high school.

Experience:
One year in chain link fence and gate installation including welding of parts and braces.
Any other combination of training and/or experience which demonstrates that the applicant is likely to possess the required skills knowledges and abilities may be considered.

Special Requirements

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a valid class C California Drivers License is required at the time of appointment and evidence of a safe driving record is required.

An applicant for this class will be required to obtain at his/her own expense and submit his/her motor vehicle driving record at the time of appointment. The record must meet and be maintained at the districts safe driving record standard. Failure to meet this requirement will result in the disqualification and/or rejection of the eligible regardless of any other standing.
Incumbents are subject to pertinent provisions of the General Industry Safety Orders of the California Code of Regulations regarding protective equipment when exposed to hazardous materials including but not limited to asbestos and lead. Incumbents in this class are required to wear protective clothing gear and equipment as required by law and provided by the District.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Outdoors at school sites occasionally in inclement weather; inside in maintenance shops subject to fumes and smoke from welding; driving District vehicle to sites.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Lifting up to 60 pounds; stooping and bending for extended periods; reaching overhead above the shoulders; climbing ladders; kneeling crawling and sitting; dexterity of fingers and hands to operate hand and power tools and equipment.

APPOINTMENT
In accordance with Education Code Section 45301 an employee appointed to this class must serve a probationary period of six (6) months during which time an employee must demonstrate at least an overall satisfactory performance. Failure to do so shall result in the employees termination.
