Job Summary

POSITION SUMMARY This position is responsible for assuring the integrity of sterilization and processing of supplies instruments and equipment is maintained in accordance with accreditation and Quality Control Standards. Works as substitute Central Stores employee on hours of the day these departments are not open. The individual in this position will be required to fully understand the purpose and operation of Perioperative Services along with having the ability to make decisions based on sound judgment when a situation dictates. Maintains documentation for all methods. Adheres to recall procedures. 2. Operates washer sterilizer ultrasonic Sterrad EO and Steam sterilizers in accordance with manufacturers guidelines. Develops and requires strict adherence to maximum quality control processing and cleaning standards. Completes sterilization and processing according to documented procedures. Checks on-site department in AM &PM to replenish supplies and pick up biohazard bins in a timely fashion. 3. Maintains loaner instruments. Follow IFU s and tracking set forth in the SPD. 4. Maintains and follows all IFU s. 5. Responsible for the cleaning of all flexible scopes. 6. Responsible for testing and reviewing all instruments and sets to ensure they are in proper working order prior to being put back into use. 7. Responsible for taping of instruments according to AAMI and AORN recommendations. 8. Responsible for communicating with all on-site and off-site departments to ensure their needs are met. 9. Maintain knowledge of where to send out various pieces of equipment for repairs. 10. Understand and follow the process for IUSS. 11. Responsible for assuring all QA tests are done according to IFU AAMI AORN and hospital processes. 12. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars workshops and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise. 13. Ensures no injuries to self or others by following safe work practices and policies. This includes but is not limited to: security and safety understanding of MSDS equipment infection control fire disaster safe lifting and body mechanics. 14. Ensures self-compliance with organization policies and procedures as well as labor agreements. 15. Ensures the interface with team members and other support groups is conducted in a courteous and efficient manner conducive with the organization s values. 16. Conducts self in a professional manner and ensures personal appearance meets the standards necessary to perform the job function while representing the organization. 17. Ensures that additional accountabilities as may be required by management be handled in a manner necessary to meet organizational standards. WORK ENVIRONMENT The individual in this position reports to the Perioperative Services Director. This position works closely with staff members and sterile core technician in order to promote optimal care for the surgical patient. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE Education: a. High school diploma or GED. Certification: a. CST IAHCSMM or NICHSPOP certification preferred. b. Basic Life Support Heartsaver (HS) level to be completed within three (3) months of hire. Experience: a. One (1) year of SPD surgery or other related experience preferred. Skills/Competencies: a. Knowledge of inventory control principles and sterile techniques. b. Knowledge of medical terminology preferred. c. Time management skills (deadlines for equipment sterilization). d. Research abilities (new equipment sterilization procedure). e. Knowledge of numeric filing system preferred (daily filing of paperwork). f. Knowledge of Meditech system preferred. g. Demonstrates competency on equipment listed on department specific checklist. h. Critical thinking skills: Seeks resources for direction when necessary. Performs independent problem solving. Decision-making is logical and deliberate. i. Performs actions that demonstrate accountability. Exercises safe judgment in decision-making. Practices within legal and ethical guidelines. j. Demonstrates competency in ability to care for customers/patients across the age continuum. k. Knowledge of inventory control principles and sterile techniques. l. Knowledge of medical terminology preferred. m. Time management skills (deadlines for equipment sterilization). n. Research abilities (new equipment sterilization procedure). o. Knowledge of numeric filing system preferred (daily filing of paperwork). PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 1. Frequent and at times prolonged standing walking lifting reaching kneeling bending stooping crouching pushing and pulling. 2. Manual dexterity 3. Heavy physical effort ability to lift/carry up to 50 lbs. (supplies and equipment). 4. Good reading eyesight. Is able to see clearly 20 feet or more to judge distance and space relationships and to see peripherally. Full visual acuity color perception. 5. Ability to communicate using verbal and/or written skills for accurate exchange of information with physicians nurses health care professionals patients and/or family and the public. There will be up to 24 hours of call off available to the facility at no cost during the course of the assignment.
