Job Summary:

The responsibilities for the Lighting Head of Department position include but are not limited to:

Operating the lighting console and calling spots for performances within the Flamingo Showroom and other special events/ shows in the theater. The head of department must have a comprehensive knowledge of power distribution moving lights GrandMA 3 properly importing new or updated lighting files from designers programming and performing a daily general check of the lighting rig prior to each performance. The Head of Department must be able to multitask and adapt watching the show and artists movements with the ability to adjust cues as needed. This technician must be able to troubleshoot lighting issues that arise during a show using clear communication to solve problems in a timely manner.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • IATSE 720 member who is A List.

  • Prior production show experience as a lighting board operator for at least 5 years.

  • Ability to operate a GrandMA 3 in GrandMA 2 mode.

  • Lead the lighting team in accomplishing department goals.

  • Able to work with the Technical Manager/ Technical Director.

  • Able to work with multiple productions and crew to troubleshoot operational show issues and clearly communicate needs/expectations with others.

  • Ability to maintain the lighting department including scheduling work calls for general maintenance such as moving light maintenance dimmer rack equipment moving light repair work areas and other maintenance duties as needed.

  • Willing to take work calls for rehearsals and other special events.

  • Able to work 6 days a week on a long-term basis.

  • Work varied shifts including weekends and holidays.

  • Ability to lift 50lbs to shoulder height.

  • High level of mobility including regularly going up and downstairs and standing/moving for 90 minute intervals.

  • Ability to work at heights.

  • Ability to operate a scissor lift and a current certification.

  • Must be comfortable with theatrical effects such as strobes haze low fog and others as production requires.

  • Be able to analyze daily show changes and adapt track to the needs of the version of the show that evening.

  • Maintain flexibility in a dynamic show environment and demonstrate a willingness to support the team with changes.

  • OSHA 10 certification.

  • Ability to train on more than one set of cues based on theatrical knowledge and skillset for other departments a plus.

  • Knowledge of networking and understanding signal flow.

Primary Job Duties

  • Keep the lighting plot and technical packet up to date.

  • Create and maintain proper show related paperwork standard operating procedures inventory and maintenance logs
  • Train subordinates providing each with knowledge development and appropriate direction to perform their responsibilities.

  • Review show schedule and work with the Technical Manager to schedule staff accordingly.

  • Work with the Technical Manager on operating and capital budgets for the Lighting Department.

  • Inspecting and maintaining lighting equipment to ensure safe and consistent operation including cleaning and routine maintenance.
  • Aid in the evolution of the production(s) by working with designers to make changes to show flow and design as required.
  • Maintaining documentation of show cues cue track and the lighting rig.
  • Training additional operators to maintain coverage for department.
  • Support special events including installation of new show lighting elements
  • Participate in all required safety emergency rescue trainings and corporate trainings as directed.
  • Help Technical Manager generate event estimates for special events or ongoing resident shows based off predicted workload load in/out scheduled schedules.
  • Coordinates the ordering of new expendables and tracks use of expendables to help predict ordering and budgetary needs.
  • Responsible for the repairs and maintenance of the venues lighting equipment and coordination of ordering supplies.
  • Makes recommendations to improve the venues lighting and production capabilities.
  • Lead show changes installations and modifications as needed.
  • Coordinate all safety OSHA and risk management initiatives.
  • Work with Technical Manager advancing performance dates interpreting technical riders and arranging for lighting equipment to fulfill contract and rider requirements.
  • Supervises load-in set-up sound checks show performance strike and load out.
  • Work with Technical Manager to implement plans to minimize payroll expenditure.
  • Coordinates with personnel from multiple departments to ensure seamless exciting events for our guests.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Technical Manager.
  • Familiarity with AutoCad Vector Works preferred.
