BROAD STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The LPN will work in collaboration with other members of the healthcare and educational team to provide appropriate healthcare services to each student under the direct supervision of the registered nurse and the building Principal/Administrator.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides medications and treatments to identified students under the supervision of the RN and according to the districts policies procedures and guidelines.
- Applies knowledge of common medications and treatments to evaluate the side effects and effectiveness of services provided.
- Collects and documents data regarding the childs health status (such as immunizations and nursing care) consistent with documentation guidelines.
- Provides written reports as required.
- Communicates with the registered nurse essential information regarding treatments provided and observations of the childs response.
- Follows written health care plans.
- Administers first aid and care to children who are ill or injured according to district protocols and under the direction of the RN.
- Communicates information from the child family physicians and other members of the health care/educational team to the registered nurse in order to facilitate coordination of services.
- Arranges and manages the physical setting of the health office.
- May be required to attend general staff meetings as requested by the Principal/Administrator.
- May be required to attend monthly nursing meetings and in-services.
- May be required to accompany children that require medical attention during transportation.
- Maintains knowledge of current trends and development in the field by reading appropriate books journals websites and other literature and attending related conferences in-services etc.
- Responsible for carrying out educational activities as requested by the principal.
- Interacts with co-workers administration students parents and the community in positive supportive and cooperative ways.
- Provides input into the development of the LPN role.
- Responsible for good attendance and punctuality and following call-in procedures to assure a safe and healthy environment for students.
- Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- New Hires must have A) completed at least two years of study at an institution of higher education (at least 60 credit hours); B) obtained an associates or higher degree; or C) achieved a passing score on a MDE approved assessment.
- BA degree preferred.
- LPN licensure required.
- Demonstrated experience with medically fragile patients (i.e. diabetes seizures tracheostomy etc.). Experience with medically fragile children preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to work well with others as a team.
- Demonstrated excellent attendance and punctuality.
- Demonstrated good communication skills (verbal and written).
- Demonstrated ability to interact with the parents public and coworkers in a respectful and courteous manner.
- Demonstrated ability to follow FERPA privacy laws.
- Demonstrated ability to participate as a member of the team.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a diverse environment.
- Demonstrated basic computer skills.
- Current CPR and First aid certification.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to:
- Sit stand walk run stoop and kneel or work on the floor on a continuous basis.
- Lift up to a 60 pound weight load.
- Bend push and/or pull loads such as pushing children in wheelchairs or moving/rearranging furniture or assisting students with standing transferring and walking.
- Physically restrain students when required.
- Utilize close and distance vision with depth perception.
- Utilize hearing abilities including auscultation using a stethoscope.
- Ride school bus during student transport.
