Psychiatry Consultant (CAMHS)

Overview

We are working with an NHS Trust in search of a dynamic and compassionate Psychiatry Consultant with expertise in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). Responsibilities

  • Provide expert psychiatric consultation diagnosis and treatment for children and adolescents with mental health concerns.
  • Develop individualised evidence-based treatment plans incorporating psychotherapy medication and integrated care approaches where appropriate.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team including psychologists nurses social workers and educational professionals to deliver comprehensive mental health services.
  • Act as a clinical leader offering guidance and supervision to junior doctors and other healthcare professionals in the CAMHS team.
  • Actively participate in and contribute to case discussions clinical audits and continuing professional development (CPD) initiatives.
  • Engage with families to provide education guidance and support in understanding diagnoses and treatment options.
  • Advocate for the mental health needs of young patients within schools community organisations and other settings.
  • Remain up-to-date with the latest research guidelines and best practices in child and adolescent psychiatry.
  • Promote a safe inclusive and non-judgemental space for all children adolescents and their families.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • A medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) and full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC).
  • Completion of higher specialist training in psychiatry with a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry or eligibility for GMC specialist registration.
  • Proven experience working in CAMHS or an equivalent setting.
  • Strong diagnostic and clinical skills particularly in areas such as mood disorders ADHD PTSD autism spectrum conditions self-harm and eating disorders in young people.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a commitment to empathy sensitivity and patient advocacy.
  • A genuine commitment to promoting equality diversity and inclusion in clinical practice and within the workplace.

Desirable:

  • Academic or research experience in the field of child and adolescent psychiatry.
  • Experience in delivering training or teaching to healthcare professionals or external stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with innovative service models that improve access to mental health care (e.g. digital interventions community outreach programmes).

Day-to-Day Duties

  • Conduct thorough psychiatric evaluations and assessments of young patients ensuring a clear understanding of presenting concerns.
  • Develop and implement treatment strategies in liaison with patients families and team members.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of treatments and make adjustments as required while maintaining open lines of communication with families.
  • Participate in team meetings care planning sessions and clinical supervision activities.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to junior staff guiding them in both clinical and professional development.
  • Engage in reflective practices to ensure continuous personal and professional growth.
  • Document patient interactions and treatment plans in compliance with regulatory and organisational requirements.
  • Identify and address potential health inequalities or barriers to care promoting access for all patients.
