Position purpose:

Provides technical support and services by operating maintaining and modifying equipment and demonstrating testing procedures in order to support the activities of students and researchers in the Environmental Engineering Laboratories (EVG) for Teaching Research and Field Work purposes and to ensure safety in the laboratories.

In this role your responsibilities will include:

1. Manage day-to-day activities in the EVG labs oversee all undergrad/graduate student labs and provide advice and guidance to students and researchers on their projects to ensure an efficient operation of the labs.
2. Organize and manage the laboratory and field practicum components of undergraduate/graduate courses and the EVG/Water Resources Field School. Prepare the laboratory exercises demonstrate test procedures provide technical support and training and supervise the students and TAs during these training activities.
3. Responsible for the operation development modification maintenance and repair of all equipment in the laboratories. This includes maintaining the gas chromatographs the atomic absorption analyzers HPLC TOC analyzer spectrophotometers analytical balances automatic pipettes water purification systems particle size analyzer microscopes autoclave incubators etc.
4. Coordinate the maintenance and repair of space and infrastructure related to the EVG labs. Implement regular maintenance programs and arrange for major repairs and overhauls when necessary.
5. Supervise and assist students in the laboratories to ensure correct operation of equipment safe handling of hazardous materials and adherence to safety guidelines and regulations of WHMIS OHSA Workplace Safety Insurance Board University policies and procedures etc..
6. Provide technical support to develop experimental setups related to both undergraduate and graduate projects in the laboratories.
7. Maintain a healthy and safe working environment for professors researchers students and personnel working in the laboratory by working closely with the Faculty of Engineering Risk Management Officer Office of Risk Management and Facilities.
8. Develop and implement an EVG labs specific hands-on health and safety training course to ensure the safety of students and researchers.

What you will bring:

  • Bachelor of Applied Science in Civil/Environmental Engineering (Chemical Engineering Chemistry Biochemistry Biopharmaceutical Science or related sciences) with at least three years of wet lab research experience. Masters degree preferred.
  • Certified/training in the following: WHMIS OHSA biological laboratory training autoclave training chemical spill response training.
  • Experience in leading and supervising a group of students
  • Experience in interpreting applying and explaining health and safety regulations and procedures
  • Computer skills: Experience with word processing and spreadsheet software.
  • Organizational skills ability to work under pressure to meet strict deadlines and to determine priorities
  • Good judgment skills and ability to show initiative
  • Effective communication skills
  • Bilingual - French and English (oral and written)
