Summary:

Under the direction of the Risk Adjustment and Coding Manager with minimal supervision the Coding Educator is responsible for the development and delivery of coding education materials related to provider coding guidelines coding updates software updates coding and billing compliance and regulatory updates. The educator creates and delivers education to the providers coding team and auditors and other licensed providers to improve the quality of documentation to assure best quality performance and representation of care provided. The educator provides applicable billing/coding and related reimbursement guidelines to include federal/state laws and regulatory requirements affecting daily business operations to JHM entities. This information is researched and delivered to providers coders auditors and staff through face-to face or virtual communication regular network publications electronic and voice communications. This position requires a close working relationship with providers and practice staff and revenue cycle team members. Extensive knowledge of government regulations and applicable reimbursement laws and regulations is required.

Highly collaborative with coding compliance practice staff practice leadership and regional/sectional leadership and production unit managers to identify coding and billing needs to facilitate change within the organization. Responsible for training and education to support professional medical services documentation and coding. Responsible for working with organizational compliance staff to assure that programs adhere to internal and external regulatory standards. Collaborates with JHM/OJHP education HIM compliance leaders and other Johns Hopkins entities to meet organizational training needs. Assist with new provider onboarding regarding medical coding and billing.

Builds and maintains strong collaborative relationships with colleagues in other groups to coordinate coding education activities. Effectively communicates relevant information to the assigned teams customers assigned committees and colleagues.

Education:

Associates degree in healthcare or business-related fields or work experience equivalent to two years of Medical Coding Instructor experience is required. Bachelors degree preferred.

Required Licensure Certification On-going Training:

  • The candidate must be certified in professional coding as demonstrated by either Certified Professional Coder (CPC from AAPC) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS from AHIMA).
  • Certified Risk Adjustment Certification (CRC) strongly preferred in addition to core certifications.

Work Experience:

  • Requires a minimum of five (5) years experience in professional fee medical coding auditing billing and medical documentation. Specialty experience strongly preferred. A minimum of 3 years of experience in instructional educational experience training provider small and large groups.
  • Past auditing and strong education/training background in coding reimbursement and provider education required.

Salary Range: Minimum 28.47/hour - Maximum 47.00/hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility. In cases where the range is displayed as a $0 amount salary discussions will occur during candidate screening calls before any subsequent compensation discussion is held between the candidate and any hiring authority.
