Brief Description of Duties

The Department of Architecture and Urban Sustainability at The University of the District of Columbia College of Agriculture Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) seeks candidates for a full-timetenure-trackfaculty position at the rank of Assistant orAssociate Professor in the Architecture and Community Planning programs.

1. Teach design studios in the undergraduate (B.S. in Architecture) and/or graduate (M. Arch.) program as well as lecture and seminar in their area of expertise at either the undergraduate or National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) accredited graduate program in Architecture.
2. Conduct research and scholarly activities in the area of Architecture and Community Planning.
3. Establish a research focus in any of the following areas but not limited to: urban sustainability sustainable architecture building technology digital fabrication urban design urban planning and built environment.
4. Engage students in community-centered activities to prepare them for entry level positions in architecture and graduate level scholarship.
5. Work with students to plan and mentor research and service-learning experiences that stress the experiential active learning and development of critical skills which are the focus of Architecture and Community Planning.
6. Be available on campus to advise students and participate in department and university service.
7. Work with students to plan and implement effective leadership development opportunities both in the classroom and outside of the classroom.
8. Develop and maintain an awareness of urban planning urban sustainability and urban architectural issues in communities in the District of Columbia.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Utilize a variety of assessment techniques to ensure achievement of student learning outcomes.
2. Demonstrate a familiarity with a variety of instructional delivery methods including on-line learning and social media to provide educational content and opportunities supported by evidence-based research and individual expertise.
3. Demonstrate a familiarity with or willingness to learn Blackboard and Banner systems or other learning management systems.
4. Be familiar with the NAAB accreditation standards.
5. Work collaboratively with the Department Chair Associate Dean Program faculty other academic units in CAUSES land-grant programs as well as with District of Columbia (DC) agencies and service providers to effectively address DC and national program priorities related to professional architecture practice.
6. Perform student advisement hold office hours and perform course reviews with appropriate corrective/enhancement actions.
7. Contribute to our land-grant mission through outreach and engagement with students Cooperative Extension and key community stakeholders.
8. Teach a variety of architecture courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

1. Terminal degree in Architecture (Master of Architecture). PhD preferred.
2. Architecture license or ability to secure a DC architecture license within 3 years of start date.
3. Three years of teaching in the Architecture and Community Planning field.
4. Strong interpersonal skills excellent verbal and written communication skills.
5. Proven record of teaching research and problem-solving skills.
6. Ability to teach hand drawing model making and apply computer technology and advanced software for drawing (REVIT) plus visualization (Escape or similar - VR/AR/human experience).
7. Familiarity with and adherence to NAAB accreditation standards.
8. A proven commitment to continuous improvement and to proactive outcomes-oriented work in meeting the responsibilities and duties described.

A candidate for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:

1. An appropriate terminal degree or agree to complete this degree within a period of time to be specified in the terms of the initial contract; and
2. At least three (3) years of full-time teaching experience including two (2) years in an institution of higher education.

Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent at the Assistant and Associate level.

A candidate for appointment to the rank ofAssociate Professorshall be required to meet the following qualifications:

1. An earned doctorate or the highest appropriate credential in the field of specialization or experience and achievements comparable to the doctorate
2. A record of scholarship and professional growth
3. At least five (5) years of full-time teaching experience in an institution of higher education including three (3) years as an Assistant Professor. (Community college experience preferred).Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.

Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants unless the person declines the preference points. If selected the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
