Senior Hydrogeologist-Hybrid
The Opportunity
The Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) a branch of the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is recruiting for a Senior Hydrogeologist to join a talented group of geoscientists within the Groundwater Geoscience Team. This position is expected to provide technical leadership support and mentorship to project staff inAGS and be engaged with other geoscientists across the organization to provide hydrogeological expertise on regulatory geoscience and environmental science relating to the stewardship and management of Albertas water resources.
The Senior Hydrogeologist will apply advanced knowledge of physical and regional hydrogeology in support of projects within the AGS Groundwater Programwhich currently focuseson predicting aquifer characteristics groundwater availability water chemistry groundwater surface water connectivity and the flow and discharge of groundwater systems. We are working in various regions in Alberta from northern studies evaluating transboundary aquifers and supporting the Oil Sands Monitoring Program to southern Alberta for aquifer mapping to improve the understanding and accessibility of groundwater.
Key responsibilities include creating hydrogeological maps developing conceptual and analytical models applying geostatistics and machine learning for data analysis and producing interpretative reports for AGS projects. This role is part of an interdisciplinary geoscience team that collaborates with external stakeholders requiring strong communication presentation skills and innovative problem-solving. The successful candidate will leverage experience education and research to meet project objectives.
What your day-to-day will look like:
Provide a senior technical role developing conceptual and numerical representations of groundwater resources that contribute toidentifying mapping and characterizing baseline and time dependent groundwater conditions (water quality and quantity).
Research develop and apply hydrogeological methods to differentiate natural versus development-induced groundwater level changes.
Prepare and deliver technical reviews presentations reports and peer-reviewed publications for the AGS AER external collaborators and project stakeholders.
Compile organize and manage subsurface geology and groundwater data from a variety of sources (e.g. oil and gas exploration data water wells environmental impact assessments) to support projectobjectivesand deliverables.
Analyze geological and hydrogeological data (e.g. water-levels and chemistry surficial and Quaternary geology mapping water budgets groundwaterallocationsand use) to support the identification and mapping of groundwater dependent ecosystems and aquifer vulnerability.
Create geological and hydrogeological maps in a GIS environment and/or 3D modelling software.
Utilize analytical and numerical solutions to assess the degree of impact/change to groundwater levels from climate change land disturbance and resource development.
Whatwerelooking for in you:
Post-graduate degree (. or Ph.D.) in either hydrogeology geology geochemistry civil or environmental engineering or earth science.
7-10years industryacademiaor government geoscience experience. Your application should highlight work or research experience in hydrogeology focused on: groundwater and energy systems; groundwater and agriculture; and/or groundwater for municipal water supplies.
Eligibility for registration as a Professional Geoscientist withAssociation of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA)is.
Experience with numerical and analytical solutions in hydrogeology and associated software.
Prior experience quantifying groundwater-surface water interaction using field-based or water balance techniques including geochemical indicators.
Possess a strong working knowledge of the hydrogeology and geology of the Alberta oil sands areas.
Proficient in ArcGIS and geostatistical analysis. Using data science or data analytics on large datasets is considered an asset.
Knowledgeable in the design and evaluation of regional groundwater monitoring networks.
Strong written and oral communication skills to communicate complex geoscience concepts and results workflows and interpretations to stakeholders.
Proven experience in project management and mentoring/coaching staff.
Collaborative team player who values developing relationships and sharing ideas and knowledge with others.
